Exactly this. The fact that some conclude (prob rightly) that it’s impossible when they look at c30% of kids at start Y10 reflects a wider set of assumptions that sees “school improvement” as a KS4 thing. It must be possible after *12* yrs of school for vast maj to reach Grade 4. 4.1K views · 13 likes · 3 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
@daisychristo I think a lot of people genuinely have no idea what the standard at grade 4 looks like. And where they do know, I think they believe it’s impossible for some kids who are entering Y10, which may be true, and not thinking ‘what is reasonable after 11 years of schooli 8.6K views · 29 likes · 3 reposts · 4 replies Open on X →
Wonderful vindication of knowledge-rich done really, really well. Subject-sensitive disciplinary teaching that is deeply thorough from Y7, scholarly (not driven by GCSE questions) & packed with joy. History teaching in @ArkSoaneAcademy is off the scale. Bravo to staff and pupils. 6.8K views · 63 likes · 13 reposts · 3 replies Open on X →
As usual @MaryMyatt on point here. Depressing that this is still an issue. We saw marked shifts away from these practices from c.2019, with better grasp of why formative assessment shouldn't copy or be treated like summative but in the past year, it's returned with a vengeance. 7.5K views · 28 likes · 4 reposts · 4 replies Open on X →
Brilliant new blog from Mark McCourt. This tackles a serious problem that is damaging subject learning and unnecessarily weakening students’ attention & motivation. Let’s stop confusing helpful consistency around classroom routines and damaging generic formats for learning. 12.3K views · 29 likes · 10 reposts · 5 replies Open on X →
NEW BLOG: Retrieval Is Not a Starter Activity https://t.co/lpyZnoOZPq https://t.co/jZxsz37uzY
Illustrated blog banner for an education article titled Retrieval Is Not a Starter Activity. A teacher leads a discussion with pupils while a mathematical problem involving trigonometry is displayed on a whiteboard. The scene emphasises the use of prior knowledge to solve new problems, with visual references to retrieval, method selection, connection-making and application. The design conveys the idea that retrieval is most powerful when embedded naturally within the story of learning rather than used as a disconnected classroom routine.

Each school subject relates to a distinctive quest for truth. SLT must know how each subject captures this, so the curriculum as a whole teaches awe, humility & respect for truth.
