@Edmund_B_W @tomhfh Great factual response from a key figure in Ruth Perry’s tragic case. Ofsted is clearly rattled by @NAHTnews hence the attack from one of the Telegraph’s attack mongrels. Ignorant but betraying its master’s noxious scent. 774 views · 38 likes · 4 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →

Harwood demands robust accountability for schools but treats accountability for Ofsted as surrender. Schools must absorb whatever harm inspection causes; the inspectorate must face no consequences for causing it. Is that really the system everyone else wants? I don’t. 1.7K views · 97 likes · 13 reposts · 4 replies Open on X →

Thirdly, Harwood’s “shame-geld” analogy is founded on an offensive fiction: teachers are using Ruth’s death to win protection from criticism. They are not. They are demanding that a state process established as a causal factor in a death be made safer, fairer and accountable… 1.4K views · 54 likes · 5 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →

Nobody argues that threatening suicide should change a school’s grade. Harwood invents that demand, then warns that conceding it invites blackmail. Preventing a state system from causing avoidable harm is not appeasement. It is the elementary duty of those operating it… 1.5K views · 47 likes · 7 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →

Replacing one overall grade with multiple graded judgements has not weakened inspection. In important respects, it has widened it: more aspects of a school are separately graded, while the same power imbalance, pressure and consequences remain, giving a school more ways to fail… 1.5K views · 56 likes · 5 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →

That is why NAHT is calling for grading to be paused. It continues to hear accounts of acute stress caused by the current system. This is not a demand to end accountability, but evidence that the reforms have failed to make high-stakes inspection safe… 1.3K views · 53 likes · 6 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →

Secondly, it is extremely difficult to understand how anyone could believe, as Harwood seems to, that the school accountability system has in any way been weakened by reforms since Ruth Perry’s death. The facts do not bear this out… 1.8K views · 60 likes · 5 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →

Ofsted has not been “ripped up”. Schools are still inspected, graded and publicly reported on, with serious consequences attached to adverse judgements. The presentation has changed; the fundamental high-stakes system has not. Ofsted’s grip on education remains firmly intact… 1.8K views · 59 likes · 5 reposts · 3 replies Open on X →

Harwood’s saying: 1. Ruth Perry was “mentally ill”, so her death is not meaningful evidence about inspection. 2. The response produced weakened the system. 3. That these concessions invite other heads to threaten suicide to evade accountability. All three claims are nonsense… 1.9K views · 63 likes · 3 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →

Describing Ruth as “one mentally ill headteacher” callously reverses cause and effect. Ruth had no history of mental illness. The Ofsted inspection caused an acute stress reaction and catastrophic mental-health deterioration. It was established as a causal factor in her death… 1.9K views · 80 likes · 5 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →

Let’s start with Ruth Perry, whom I knew for 15 years. Her inquest was an independent statutory judicial investigation, not a review or opinion. The coroner heard and tested evidence, then made formal findings of fact to the legal standard of proof… 2K views · 72 likes · 9 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →

I don’t generally engage with inflammatory posts on X. It’s the nature of this platform that being shocking is often a deliberate ploy to provoke engagement and feed the poster’s need for attention. However, I’ll make an exception for @tomhfh ’s grotesquely offensive views… https
