All of this to say, what I find offensive is that those presiding over our filthy towns and cities, corrupt police, and other failing public systems are out here arresting and prosecuting Ghanaians for attacking the “dignity of the president.”

So I’m amazed that adults are this offended by the crude commentary that they have arrested a woman for supposedly “assisting in the dissemination of videos with potential to incite violence” (or whatever that poorly written Police statement says).

You see, I didn’t even know anything about the Ghana Jollof account until the news of Salomey’s late-night abduction broke. I have since listened to some of the commentary and I have to say, I’m disappointed by the lack of wit. No nuance or double entendres, just crude insults.

The answer must have been yes, because my aunt then said, “ma carpet no so, na fa w’ano twetwe fɔm.” I remember mentally saving some of the Twi words and phrases to ask for an explanation later, as she tore into the person on the other end of the line.

I once heard my aunt on the phone with a friend (or maybe a frenemy). Once the person picked up, my aunt asked in Twi if they were at home and seated in their living room. I’m sure the person said yes, because my aunt followed up with, “nti mo carpet sɛ hɔ?”
