@RorySmith Rory you miss the other tennant of Liverpool's squad building - versitily, it's not just about having a huge squad (Man City only want 24 first teamers) its about players who can play in multiple positions, CBs who can cover RB, MF who can play 6/8/10, wingers play b 1.5K views · 2 likes · 0 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →

@RorySmith @Knox_Harrington Soft underbelly is the correct reference but also naivety - how many calm heads do we really have; who can navigate a game at 2 nil up? Sadly there’s no data field for “pausa” & so it looks like we’ll keep missing it. 903 views · 3 likes · 0 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →

@RorySmith Good piece Rory. Only thing I felt it was missing was some context on squad size. Wages Arsenal have cracked the code for squad depth. But unless they've stuck a hypnotist on the payroll (to join the dog & a pickpocket) they're going to have to pay higher wages 1/ 1.2K views · 1 likes · 0 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →

Question with Liverpool has never been why they don’t have a plan. It’s always been whether the plan they do have - and have basically stuck to for a decade - can still work given how much the demands of the Premier League have changed. https://t.co/fMJR4NBd00 40.3K views · 209 likes · 29 reposts · 10 replies Open on X →

@RorySmith Finally a journalist willing to stick their neck out and write about the elephant in the room that every fan has been talking about this summer. 3.1K views · 33 likes · 0 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →

That will be more pronounced after the insane price inflation this summer: it’s fun hoping that a clever, bargain buy pays off. It makes you see the best in the player. You want it to work out. When your team pays £100m plus, you expect them to be great. Right now. No excuses. 25K views · 104 likes · 16 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →

The higher the prices go - even for players who are not really any better than decent - the more toxic our relationship with those players will be. It is also much less enjoyable. We’re cheering spreadsheets. 64K views · 800 likes · 124 reposts · 23 replies Open on X →

But I think one bit that gets missed is the way the transfer frenzy has changed our relationship with players. Can’t be a coincidence that patience seems to have got thinner after years of treating them as completely disposable, demanding they be upgraded constantly etc 37.1K views · 353 likes · 60 reposts · 9 replies Open on X →

It’s not especially original now to say that the transfer market is seen as more interesting than the actual football itself by a lot of people. (People can be judgey about that but then you can follow transfer gossip for free, which feels significant) 35.2K views · 159 likes · 15 reposts · 3 replies Open on X →

The Premier League’s clubs seem to be employing an awful lot of scouts and analysts and executives to do the obvious thing, as expensively as possible, trading interchangeable players for meaningless numbers. https://t.co/eolwldgsPe 252.2K views · 2.1K likes · 284 reposts · 34 replies Open on X →

The @podcast_libero season preview is here, and we manage to get a whole hour out of the question "can anyone stop arsenal" when we all know that the answer is no @JamesHorncastle @MiguelDelaney and me https://t.co/0gtuAiMxC8 16.2K views · 9 likes · 1 reposts · 8 replies Open on X →

The World Cup final: a timely reminder, after FIFA blurred the line between sport and entertainment, that football does not owe you a fun time. https://t.co/6Gc68hoz4c 29.3K views · 131 likes · 17 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →

Today’s Libero is a bit different: we tried to update it through the day to track how we experienced the actual biggest game in the world. Me, @tariqpanja, @JamesHorncastle. I mean it’s not The Daily but it was fun. https://t.co/KcJFaXcVgq 28.9K views · 40 likes · 4 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →
