I read this book called Reality Hunger by David Shields; the book has a weird collage format but the basic thesis is that we are so starved for “the real” in modern life that we invent and insert it inappropriately into our products and spectacles

I’ve started wearing caftans and I really like what it’s done to my social interface for the most part; gives off a calm and regal vibe
however. It really makes me look like I want to talk about crystals and astrology. Not sure how to mitigate this https://t.co/4yOGeYP92F

it feels very meaningful to be in one’s 30s-40s in the 2020s— to have lived enough to really know what life was like before social media/AI/biotech advances, but also to be facing down the second half of life with them
I do feel that in this sense millennials have a calling

Not my advice but I had a friend in his 80s who was happily married and he attributed their success to two daily practices: every morning he and his wife would have coffee together and visit and every night they’d make a point to chat before bed. This way they made it a priority

the Borgesian Conundrum, that "each artist CREATES his precursors," illustrated. Of course it makes sense that there should be a painter synthesizing the work of medieval icon painters, old masters of Spain and Italy, & the surrealism of Magritte & Kahlo. But there wasn't before!

what made me cry was this: that it's possible to do a genuinely new thing in the world as an artist by synthesizing all the work you love. You can drop something novel into the world that feels fully-formed/natural because you're weaving all your particular influences together

this is one of the last paintings he made, in the year before his death. It’s called “Waiting to Leave.”
I think it says it all— loneliness and trepidation, but also quietude, peace, even hope. And, as always, that direct gaze: plaintive, but with a little twinkle, too. https:/

seeing art in person matters because it's in the TEXTURE that you can see the love and the care. You can feel the way the artist loves the materials, and you feel the weight of the hours the artist took to bring this particular vision to you. It has a spiritual thickness to it ht

I can't begin to say what being in the room with all of these felt like—charged and holy, like I was in the presence of the sum of an entire deeply-lived life. The show is still on at the San Diego Art Museum for one more week. This is his family's private collection https://t.c

I like these guys holding on for dear life, caught in a silly but deadly serious moment, dangling over an endless quiet sea. You might say that's life https://t.co/QkVySzDywW

Castañeda's work speaks of a world that can feel lonely, strange, and confusing, but that also has moments of transcendence, grace, and peace. The gaze of the many little figures inspires both pathos and humor. They are doing their best. https://t.co/9zRWGlHxmT

I really, really liked the ways he chooses to engage with modern art in a formal way—the unusually-shaped custom canvasses, diptychs, intentional cracks and seams. It's clever conceptually while still being aesthetically beautiful https://t.co/pp5FB3iwev

What felt moving about the exhibition is that it seems like this is a guy who has "wrestled with his identity" in a serious way but who nonetheless does not take himself too seriously. He's just a weird little beardo trying to understand what it's all about and he knows that http

If you spend enough time with the paintings—which at first seem very melancholy, even severe—you realize that he is also very, very funny. He has a relationship to religious painting/iconography is very "deadpan." It's very wry but somehow also quite sincere https://t.co/7TUoomai

the painting that perhaps touched and tickled me most was "Nuestro Sacrificio," "Our Sacrifice," in which he portrays himself as both Abraham and Isaac. God staying Abraham's hand is depicted as a ghostly wash, something you notice with a little gasp as you look closer https://t.

Rèné Magritte and Frida Kahlo are the two biggest looming influences, both very "philosophical" painters who work in mysteries, allegory, and repeated motifs. Castañeda also displays a clear conversancy with the history of European religious art & iconography https://t.co/bJBIrDT

almost all Castañeda's paintings feature the same character, who is, presumably, him. The effect created is certainly a bit eerie, but also rather charming. It's art obviously "about identity" (a stale museum cliché) in a way that felt totally fresh and sincere to be among https:

recently I saw an art exhibition that truly made me both laugh and cry: a retrospective of a painter I had never heard of before, Mexican surrealist Alfredo Castañeda (1938-2010). Every painting felt like an "instant classic," as if it had always been part of the canon
