Either way, I'm heartbroken for my friends in Banda. I visited at the peak of LRA violence over a decade ago, and just last month received audio messages from friends there about how peaceful the region has been. 273 views · 4 likes · 1 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
This attack, even if it's a one-off event, will be traumatizing for so many people, and has likely re-shattered a sense of security that was just taking recently taking root after they survived nearly a decade of LRA violence. 204 views · 1 likes · 1 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →
So it is theoretically possible the UPC carried out this week's mass abduction. However, the abduction of so many children and youth doesn't fit the UPC MO, especially in DRC. 164 views · 1 likes · 1 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
We also know that LRA and UPC groups have collaborated in the past, so it's possible there is some coordination going on, if in fact the LRA is responsible for this week's attack. 181 views · 1 likes · 1 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
However, most armed group attacks in this region of DRC over the past year have actually been cross-border raids by the UPC, which has groups based in the same Haut Mbomou region of CAR as the LRA does. 165 views · 1 likes · 1 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
On that "if confirmed" point... this attack has a classic LRA MO and occurred in communities that LRA groups historically targeted for child abductions. We also know of two LRA groups based in CAR (~100 miles away from the DRC attack but well within LRA striking distance). 182 views · 1 likes · 1 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
We also know that the LRA groups in CAR are low on food and frustrated with the slow pace of demobilization. And many of the previously abducted children in their groups have escaped over the past two years. So it's feasible they've resumed their old ways in desperation. 179 views · 1 likes · 1 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
We're currently investigating this reported #LRA attack and mass child abduction in #DRC's Bas Uele province. A quick thread with some context. 1/ https://t.co/UzfVSG6RAC 11.2K views · 16 likes · 20 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
The last documented LRA attack in CAR or DRC was Dec 2021, and the last documented child abduction was March 2021. So this attack, if confirmed as LRA, would be somewhat shocking. Many, including me, thought that the LRA's mass abduction days were over. 191 views · 2 likes · 2 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
