2) We don't really need ergodicity, but only the *conclusion* of the ergodic theorem, i.e. equality of time and phase space averages

@LauraDeming Yes, attractor states/dissipative systems dont satisfy ergodicity. It was mainly adopted to be able to define thermodynamic equilibrium at the very beginnings of the field.
