Do listen to this absorbing documentary by @GeorgeWParker on the politics of the Bayeux Tapestry down the centuries. He has woven together many voices to tell some fascinating stories. Thanks for including me! https://t.co/FbUlJAsKRZ 2.7K views · 62 likes · 23 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →

It’s T Day! I’ve had the huge privilege as Special Envoy of supporting the 🇬🇧🇫🇷professionals as they worked intensively, built trust and solved the unprecedented problems of moving safely and exhibiting the Bayeux Tapestry. Opening ceremony today, public viewing from 10 Sept. 1/4 8.6K views · 146 likes · 30 reposts · 7 replies Open on X →
Shuckburgh went on to be FO Middle East Director 1954-56. It’s hard to imagine now the outsize role UK played in the region in 1954. We still had 70,000 troops in Egypt and UK technicians ran the Suez Canal. There were RAF squadrons in Iraq and a naval base at Aden. 1/5 5.9K views · 36 likes · 6 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →
@LordRickettsP Sounds like a riveting read! 663 views · 2 likes · 0 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →
To round this off, another fun aspect of the diary is a glimpse into 1950s air travel. How’s this: one evening ES worked in the FO till 8pm, was driven to London airport and caught the 9pm BEA Elizabethan aircraft to Paris. First class only, gourmet meal. Try doing that today! // 1.6K views · 31 likes · 1 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
ES found Eden ‘like a sea anemone covered with sensitive tentacles all recording currents of opinion around him’. A previous Private Secretary Nicholas Lawford (who figures in Peace Makers) also found that Eden could ‘overwhelm one with fury’ when small things went wrong. 7/8 1.6K views · 13 likes · 1 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
ES found himself expected to be ‘a sort of housekeeper for this entire ménage’. When Clarissa started sending him the menus she wanted prepared that day, and notes saying ‘Please, where is the Evian water’ he drew a line - and got in a conference officer to run things. 6/8 1.2K views · 10 likes · 1 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
Two days later, ‘the Edens came after dinner, and we had got their rooms all ready for them, their bags unpacked, fire in his bedroom. They were delighted’. Eden copied Churchill’s habit of working in bed. ES was constantly summoned but declined when Clarissa was in bed too! 5/8 1.3K views · 12 likes · 1 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
Eden, who was given to sudden tantrums, was ‘enraged to see the delegation offices surrounded by green grass, chestnut trees and sunshine’. ES went into action. Through friends he found a sumptuous villa to rent, with the encouraging name of Le Reposoir’, complete with staff. 4/8 1.3K views · 15 likes · 1 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
For the 3 month conference, Eden and his wife Clarissa were booked into the luxury Hotel Beau Rivage, bizarrely next door to the Chinese delegation. Eden was furious: ‘a filthy hotel, noisy, smelly, uncomfortable, insecure..’ ES suggested a walk to the Delegation’s villa. 3/8 ht 1.7K views · 14 likes · 1 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
Eden’s best year as Foreign Secretary was probably 1954, when he helped resolve various European security issues (Trieste, European defence) and dominated the 5-power Geneva Conference on Indochina, creating a chance for peace. But behind the scenes all was not plain sailing. 2/8 1.9K views · 14 likes · 2 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
The best diplomatic diaries put the personal details back into the history of great events. There are rich pickings in ‘Descent to Suez’ the enjoyable diaries of Evelyn Shuckburgh (ES), Eden’s Private Secretary from 51-54. Let’s start with a bad case of Villa envy in Geneva 1/8. 18.3K views · 95 likes · 17 reposts · 3 replies Open on X →
