Shuckburgh went on to be FO Middle East Director 1954-56. It’s hard to imagine now the outsize role UK played in the region in 1954. We still had 70,000 troops in Egypt and UK technicians ran the Suez Canal. There were RAF squadrons in Iraq and a naval base at Aden. 1/5

To round this off, another fun aspect of the diary is a glimpse into 1950s air travel. How’s this: one evening ES worked in the FO till 8pm, was driven to London airport and caught the 9pm BEA Elizabethan aircraft to Paris. First class only, gourmet meal. Try doing that today! //
