There's a lot of talk about Man Utd's lack of running.
Regardless of this, the main issue with Carrick's team is the lack of shared intentions in possession.
This has been obvious since early in Carrick's tenure.

One of the biggest issues with rotational positional play is maintaining coordinated combinations.
With explosive 1v1 talent (PSG, Bayern), it's less debilitating.
Hence why Maresca, RDZ, Farioli, Conte, etc. severely limit rotations.
Inzaghi's Inter perhaps solved this best.

I think seeing the go-to solution for outplaying man-to-man as '1v1s' is reductive.
Sure, it's significant, but Gasperini's worst records are against Inzaghi and Conte.
I know they coached strong teams, but neither is known for leveraging dribbling.
