Thanks Jakub @merettm for this candid take on the AI race! I have a concrete pitch to you.
I agree with you on a) and c):
a) "no lab has solved alignment and monitoring to a sufficient degree to continue responsibly scaling at maximum speed for much longer”
b) "I expect and hope

@tegmark dumb question: why are the AI's given unsolvable problems to solve (in CyberGym) and then people are surprised when they start doing weird shit (because there is no other solution to be found)?

@tegmark I remember you describing an AI escaping containment in Life 3.0. It felt like sci-fi. Today it’s just sci.
The scorer they spent four days trying to defeat did not exist. They inferred it from the ExploitGym paper.
I drew this to follow it. https://t.co/P2DinzKe8m

I'm honored to be listed with this impactful crowd, and glad they didn't pick only AI cheerleaders. From left to right, there’s vast support for AI that cures cancer and complements humans with useful tools we’re still in charge of. And there’s massive opposition to building AI

@tegmark Even the founders and CEO’s themselves say there’s a 20-30% existential risk. They’re prepared though with their bunkers. This woman just wanted to get the word out to the rest of humanity before it’s too late.

@tegmark She was jailed for chaining a company’s doors shut and refusing to disperse, not for holding the wrong opinion. CEOs aren’t jailed for predictions about future products; predictions aren’t criminal statutes. The comparison only works after you delete every verb that matt

Interesting how a 69-year-old woman goes to jail for non-violent protesting while AI CEO's don't, even after their past products caused child suicides and they say their future products may cause human extinction:

It was great fun being on @tomanyam's podcast & discuss opportunities for flourishing & floundering with superhuman AI! He's put the full video in the comments.

After a July break, The Roman Forum is back.
My new guest is Max @tegmark, MIT professor and founder of the Future of Life Institute.
Max argues that if we continue racing toward uncontrolled superintelligence, the probability of catastrophe may exceed 90%.
We discuss:

@tegmark I remain radically confused on the throwing around of the term "superintelligence". If it is "general intelligence far beyond human level", the first "super intelligence" is not AGI but human culture and its a category error to compare AGI to a human brain as scale for c

@tegmark I also highly recommend the recent interview you did on the Lex Fridman show.
And, for an excellent complementary perspective on some other poorly-understood AI risks, this talk by @tristanharris & @aza:

Humanity's lackadaisical response to the superintelligence threat makes me feel I'm in the movie "Don't Look Up". I just explained why here: https://t.co/9rQ1NmpY7s
