‼️ This paragraph from Reuters story on the meeting between US and Houthis stands out:
The Houthis told US officials that they had no intention of attacking American vessels or Israeli ships. https://t.co/wwR7ZuU1fM

@DavidZabinsky Haven't ever heard this story. Sad to see some of the things that have been done in the name of ego and progress.

And those meteorite fragments Peary brought back all those years ago?
They are still – STILL – standing proud and tall in New York’s American Museum of Natural History.
Think there’s any mention of Minik or his father at the exhibition?
Ha.
Take a wild guess. https://t.co/rac

And for Minik, or Mene as he'd also go by?
He’s been buried in New Hampshire since 1918, not far from where he died.
Home, I suppose.
Just like his father. https://t.co/uAhQha2fnn

Today, there’s a plaque at Qisuk’s grave in Greenland.
It reads in the Inuit language, referring to his remains:
"They have come home."
Finally.
If only Minik was around to have seen it for himself.
Peary, too. https://t.co/vY57WuifQl

Until 1993.
Historian and author Kenn Harper fights the museum and has Minik’s father’s remains returned to Greenland after a staggering 96 years.
And they’ve been there ever since. https://t.co/7I2iRORAne

But by 1918, the Spanish Flu erupts.
Minik catches it.
And dies.
At 28 years of age.
Never able to do what was most important to him:
Send his father back home. https://t.co/U9hpLNlfFF

By 1916, when Minik is 26, he re-attempts his fight to take possession of his father’s remains.
But alas - the museum, still, just does not care.
Minik concedes - again - and moves to New Hampshire - a small taste of the motherland - where he finds work as a lumberjack. https:/

But after 8 years, Minik returns to New York.
No, not out of yearning.
But because he had forgotten his native tongue…
And how to hunt.
Just as his father Qisuk had succumbed to the foreign elements in New York, Minik feels he too will suffer the same fate…
On his own land h

It gets more heartbreaking.
"I gave [up] when…the museum told me for the last time I could not have my father’s bones to bury them," he says.
My own people are kinder and… more human, and I am going back to them.
My land is frozen and desolate, but we can bury our dead…" http

Before leaving the US, at the age of 18, Minik tells reporters:
"You’re a race of scientific criminals.
I know I’ll never get my father’s bones out of the American Museum of Natural History.
I am glad enough to get away before they grab my brains and stuff them into a jar!" h

Less than a year later, Minik forfeits.
Hopelessly.
A stranger in a foreign land, he seeks his homeland long lost.
No, not the Bronx…
But Greenland.
Peary, who’s been all but invisible for Minik’s childhood, funds his trip back amidst public pressure.

The museum obliges.
Or so Minik thinks.
They bury - instead of his father - a log wrapped in cloth, in hopes of fooling Minik and keeping his father’s dead body as an artifact.

Minik gets older.
And as he does, he makes it a mission of his to fight the museum…
To take his unforgotten father’s dissected remains from the closet - as if they were a mere science experiment - and give him a proper and dignified burial back home. https://t.co/rpYDRPKlrI

Thankfully, Minik is soon adopted by a William and Rheta Wallace, who do lovingly raise Minik in the Bronx.
But even as Minik is brought up as “an American” in the Wallace household, he still very much feels like - in his words - "a freak" to those around him. https://t.co/dt06p

But Peary gets bored of taking care of Minik.
And abandons him and leaves him, to well…make it on his own.
As a 7-year-old.

Peary doesn’t care.
Instead of sending the corpses back to their families in Greenland, Peary orders the bodies to be dissected.
And given to the museum’s collection. https://t.co/gRRWi4rTw1

By now, Uisaakassak, one of two survivors, is sent back to Greenland.
But Minik, the other, who’s just a boy? And who’s just watched his father die?
He’s kept in New York.
Alone.
Under - ostensibly - the supposed care of Robert Peary. https://t.co/pRKbfumt5x

The Inuits are ushered off the ship - like cattle - and sent immediately to their new home: a "damp cellar" in the museum under the eye of Mr. Robert Peary.
But watchful…or caring, or even…human…would not be words to describe Peary’s care.
Not at all.

The group buys every bit of it, and just like that: six Inuits find themselves far, far from home.
As the delegation slowly reaches Boston Harbor, there’s a fury of press awaiting them.
"Explorer Peary brings a company of esquimaux with him to Boston!" screams the Boston Globe.

But none of it’s for research, he tells them.
No, not at all.
You’ll have "nice warm houses in the sunshine land," he says, to get the group excited.
"And guns and knives and needles and many other things!"

So in 1897 in Greenland, Peary meets a man named Qisuk and persuades him to come to the US with him.
As well as Qisuk’s 4-year-old son Minik.
And another man, Uisaakassak.
Add to that Atangana and his wife and daughter, and Peary has six Inuits in tow. https://t.co/7nvhVgFHSz
