US budget deficit this year: ~6% of GDP. Outside of wars or recessions, that's the highest in the postwar era.⁣ ⁣ We're borrowing at emergency-level scale with no emergency and no political will to change course. Bond markets have noticed. Voters haven't yet. https://t.co/1fTPpwF 9.5K views · 368 likes · 144 reposts · 13 replies Open on X →

August added 162,000 jobs, way above forecasts of 50-60,000.⁣ ⁣ But the composition tells a different story than the headline. New jobs are mostly all in healthcare or social assistance. Other sectors suffered.⁣ ⁣ https://t.co/I8GmHIndQG 8K views · 169 likes · 62 reposts · 15 replies Open on X →

The jobs numbers look legit. Hold the conspiracy theories.⁣ ⁣ Plenty to worry about in this economy still. But these statistics are real, and they're coming from serious statisticians. https://t.co/BXGwW80xCH 13.6K views · 282 likes · 52 reposts · 51 replies Open on X →

The U.S. got great jobs numbers this morning and the President posted through it in such an absolutely bonkers way that I'm actually now MORE worried about our economic future. (See my earlier posts if you need the deets.) 31.6K views · 582 likes · 79 reposts · 21 replies Open on X →

@JustinWolfers Australia likewise has the 2005 Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA). Doesn't stop Trump's big pharma backers from seeking to meddle in our gold standard Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) to raise the price of our medicines. There's a lotta talk about rising bond yields. Lemme platypus-splain what's going on, and whether you should worry. https://t.co/Y06yauqAq3 12.1K views · 64 likes · 11 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →

Rising bond yields aren't a crisis. Nothing here looks disorderly, nothing says big trouble is coming tomorrow.⁣ ⁣ But it will still touch your life. That can look like higher rates on mortgages, car loans, student loans.⁣ ⁣ Not good, but not catastrophic https://t.co/VjIkkkWKEx 10.8K views · 262 likes · 65 reposts · 7 replies Open on X →

@JustinWolfers That is why no one trusts the idiot president about anything. He is a serial liar and con man. But hey, had a “reality” (far from it) tv show so we elected him. And then he attacked the capital. So we elected him again 195 views · 10 likes · 2 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →

The idea that America faced towering tariff walls abroad just isn't supported by the numbers. It hasn't been true for decades.⁣ ⁣ Canada and Mexico traded with the US duty-free under USMCA, a deal Trump himself negotiated. Korea did the same under KORUS. @PlatypusEcon The platypus has a sixth sense — it picks up signals invisible to everyone else. That's what good economics gives you. The promise: See clearly in murky waters. https://t.co/wHsDlaTzS6 2.6K views · 54 likes · 5 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →

@PlatypusEcon Why "platypus"? The British thought it was a hoax. A mammal that lays eggs, swims with its eyes closed, hunts by sensing electrical fields. It defies the categories. So does economics, when done right. https://t.co/p2mBW48VAm 6.9K views · 146 likes · 21 reposts · 4 replies Open on X →

@PlatypusEcon Teaching economics is what I know best — and what I most believe can make people's lives, and the world, better. A way of seeing the world more clearly. A salve for news that makes you anxious. A tool you'll use every day. And — once it clicks — fun. 7.4K views · 149 likes · 13 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →
