The ancient Saint Catherine’s Monastery in Sinai.
It is a relic of a lost time, being from the 6th century and before the Islamic conquest and transformation of Egypt. https://t.co/2xm4kdEteg

@RomeInTheEast You’re forgetting Edessa, which produced incredible scholarship, the School of Edessa (which would later move to Nusaybin), and catalyse a missionary expansion as far as East Asia.

@RomeInTheEast I think its impressive that while Alexandria and Antioch are pretty overlooked among those five, Edessa was a place that had equal, or more significant spiritual gravity within the history of Christendom and yet is massively overlooked.

In 600AD there were 5 cities of honor in Christendom, each with their own Patriarch. Rome, Constantinople, Antioch, Jerusalem, and Alexandria.
The Pentarchy does exist administratively, but 4/5 cities were later conquered and more or less removed by from the world of https://t.c

Today we remember the Fall Of Constantinople!
It was no ordinary city - it was New Rome, the city of Constantine, the Queen of Cities. It was the center of an ancient civilization, the capital, and the beacon of the Roman world!
On May 29, 1453 it fell, conquered by the Turks!

@RomeInTheEast In saying that the city was not his or anyone else's to surrender, Constantine did not just show bravery, he exemplified the concept of the res publica, a commonwealth of which the ruler is a guardian, not the owner.

The long and splendid history of the Roman Empire had ended, and it was to be a permanent end. A 1480 year old Roman state was extinguished.
The Queen of Cities, Constantinople, was to be appropriated, reinvented, and Islamized for a new purpose as capital of the Ottoman Empire.

The people of the city now had to suffer the consequences. Mehmed had to honor his promise to let his soldiers sack the city and take spoils, many had died for him.
Most citizens were enslaved, some suffered worse fates. Trebizond would surrender in 1461 to avoid these horrors.

“As soon as his soldiers realized that Giustiniani was gone they lost heart.”
From here, the defense unravelled. Constantine tried to resist, but after some Janissaries broke in through a small gate called the Kerkoporta it was over, and the Emperor died in the struggle. https://

“Just before the break of day, Giovanni Giustiniani, who had been holding the line at the critical point for more than 6 hours, was wounded. The Emperor hurried up to beg him to stay at his post, but he was bleeding and in pain and too weak to carry on.”
He retired to his ship.

The Sultan’s Janissaries were “fresh and eager” as they attacked. The battle was now hectic and “the fighting was now man to man, while some of the janissaries tried to bring up scaling ladders.”
Then the real catastrophe - a single wound spelled doom for the entire defense. htt

However, Mehmed had made a ruthless calculation.
If he kept up the assault long enough, “it was expensive in casualties, but the Sultan had the men to spare.” He sacrificed many soldiers to tire out the defenders.
He saved his best soldiers for the final wave of the attack. htt

Even they could not break through.
The Genoese commander Giustiniani and his elite troops simply repelled everything that came at them throughout this entire battle.
The Ottoman fleet had no better luck along the sea walls, where the Fourth Crusade had entered Constantinople. ht

“For nearly two hours they hammered at the weakest section of the wall. But the breach was held by Giustiniani and his men; the Emperor was there to help, and the attackers began to fall back.”
But then a 2nd wave of even better soldiers took their place & pressed the attack! ht

“The attack began in the early hours of Tuesday 29 May. Wave upon wave of the Sultan’s front-line troops charged up to the land walls, yelling their war cries and excited to frenzies of courage by the beat of drums and the blare of trumpets.”
The Ottomans threw everything! https

“The people made their way as if by instinct to the cathedral of St. Sophia.” The people “crowded into the great church to pray together for their deliverance.”
Even anti-unionists who had refused to enter the Hagia Sophia prayed inside, this was no time for theological debates.

After the procession made its way around the City, Constantine XI addressed his Roman and Italian officers, as well as the people of Constantinople. He encouraged them all to stand strong in the face of the immense challenge they all knew was coming. https://t.co/FFbCcXl0CL

Inside Constantinople, the Emperor “had the icons and relics from the city churches brought out and carried around the walls, while all the church bells rang. A procession was formed of Greeks and Latins alike, chanting hymns and prayers.” https://t.co/ocaEhZRNLI

“On Monday May 28 the defenders knew the moment of truth was upon them.”
The Turks were not assaulting the walls, but instead were resting.
Mehmed was instructing his officers on the plans, everything had to be done correctly.
Failure would mean the end of the siege! https://t.

Mehmed ordered the bombardment of the walls to intensify, one section even collapsed into ruins.
To lay the foundations for an all-or-nothing assault, he had his soldiers fill the moat in front of the walls so it could be crossed easier, taking casualties as they did so. https:/

Mehmed was no fool, he did not seriously expect Constantine to hand over his City. It would discredit him as a ruler completely.
Thus it was time to “promise his soldiers the right of three days of plunder and a just division of the spoils in anticipation of victory.” https://t.

Sultan Mehmed II “sent a messenger to him offering term on which a surrender could be arranged.”
The Emperor said that “they would rather die than surrender…”
This was the last communication between a Roman Emperor and Ottoman Sultan. https://t.co/RPwO5HAc8G

Some advisors told the Emperor it may be best if he went to the Peloponnese, and leave the City to its fate.
Maybe one day he could return if he fled, but to what?
However, “he would not go down in history as the Emperor who ran away. He would stand and die with his people.” ht

While there were signs that were interpreted as spiritually implying defeat could be coming, Constantine XI would hear none of that. His defiance and resistance was unquestionable and resolute.
The Romans and Italians defending the city stood firm on the Theodosian walls! https:
