Kamal and Karthik Raja go one more step ahead and swap playback!
Briefly Kamal sings for Prabhu Deva and Karthik Raja sings for Kamal.
Oh boy, we used to make movies in this town!
Velu Nayakan need not dance , but Kamal could have done more numbers.
Fin. Vanakkam.

The under appreciated song from Kathala Kathala is ofc "Saravana Bhava" which probably needs an entire Musicals in Madras Day lecture

Whose fault is that Karthik Raja was IR's son and we continue to neglect his genius?
This is a literal swap song- in the movie Kamal and Prabhu are swapping girlfriends.
So the song swaps between light Kollywood classic dance to modern choreography and back.

In "Paer vechalum" you can see Kamal going extreme lengths to balance both story telling and traditional tamil cinema choreography. Again a song like no other.
A brief return to classic dancing Kamal can be seen in Kathala Kathala of course everyone loosens up with Prabhu Deva

In Avvai, he plays a struggling assistant dance master but there is hardly a noteable dance song in the movie.
Often his post 87 songs come well within the story and have plot elements leaving less room to do the shake
Exceptions include MMKR

Don't get me wrong, Kamal continued to dance- but he never highlighted or wanted to be seen enjoying it- think about Akhada and Maya Machindra from Indian.
Only in the so called lighter movies we can see him literally "put his hair down"

Then comes Nayakan and changes everything in Tamil Cinema and in Kamal's graph.
He is now our Pacino/Deniro.
What does Kamal say to Mani?
"Velunayakan does not dance"

we come to 1987.
If there is a song which screams kathukitta motha vithayum erakaren and 1 still which choreographers fear to attempt.
Yeah you guessed it "Ammamma Vanthaingu Singakutty" it's Gene Kelly meets Puliyur Saroja in a never before never again kindoff song

'85 Kamal the overachiever he is did everything he could do in Saagar, Bollywood never recovered
'86 Vikram which has the gold standard Kamal dance in En Jodi Manjakuruvi

The glorious early 80s was when there would be Kamal dance song- mostly choreographed by himself + Raghu master- another underrated Kamal collaborator.
Remember Kamanukku Kaman from Uruvangal Maaralam?
Ofcourse same year Sagara Sangamam.

Here's my Kamal theory for you to ponder over the weekend.
1986/87 were the last years when Kamal enjoyed dancing on screen fully aware that he was the best in the business.
Post Nayakan it is a skill that he tries to suppress a lot so as to be taken as a serious actor.
