Attica reshaped the national conversation on prisons, racism, and state violence. The leaders — Barkley, Big Black, Clark, Melville, Blyden, Al‑Jundi — became symbols of resistance. Barkley's message still echoes: “We are men. We are not beasts.” #KeepItWoke #DedicatedtoTam✡️🕊 h

42 men died — inmates and hostages. Autopsies proved hostages were killed by police bullets, not inmates. After retaking of the prison, guards ordered inmates to strip naked and forced them to crawl through broken glass and waste-filled trenches. Inmates described torture (cont)

State government officials lied for days about Attica in order to justify the massacre. They said they gave the inmates an ultimatum to surrender; and that the prisoners, who were mostly Black and Latino, had castrated White hostages. On Sept 8–9, 1971 — a fight broke out, resulting in two men thrown into solitary. A gate was locked at the wrong moment. By 9 a.m., 1,200 inmates had taken control of the prison. They seized D‑Yard and took 43 hostages — but immediately organized into a political assembly.(cont)

Most inmates were Black or Latino. Guards were almost entirely White. The conditions were brutal: one shower a week, censored mail, starvation-level food, and constant racial abuse. Attica wasn’t chaos — it was a political rebellion led by incarcerated men who organized themselves with discipline and purpose. Here’s what really happened, and who the leaders were. By 1971, Attica held 2,200 men in a prison built for 1,600. (cont) https://t.co/6qDy1rpiiZ 370 views · 35 likes · 16 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →

When we talk about Asian American history, we must include the terror—not just the exclusion laws. We must talk about all of it! Watsonville shows how quickly economic fear + racial panic + political scapegoating can turn into organized violence. In 2011, California issued an apology. Watsonville followed. But apologies don’t erase the truth: The Watsonville Riots were part of a larger pattern of anti‑Asian violence, rooted in labor exploitation, sexualized racism, and white vigilantism. In 1933, California bans marriages between Filipinos and Whites. In 1934, the Tydings‑McDuffie Act slashes Filipino immigration to 50 people per year. Racial terror became policy.
