Everyone's talking about AI-generated HTML. But have you tried giving your sites a zero-config API for saving data, file storage, AI, websockets, etc? We did this at Shopify. Runs on a single VM that costs $200/month, and it's changed the way we work. We call it Quick 👇🧵 842.8K views · 3K likes · 165 reposts · 114 replies Open on X →

@pushmatrix checked the code but prefer it to be fragile/brittle 😄 https://t.co/pCf7MZ7PYw

It works with multitouch too on mobile. Try it out here: https://t.co/hUAyps6Jyz 32.7K views · 388 likes · 15 reposts · 22 replies Open on X →
Huh, so that's why text is called a string https://t.co/TaZB9wqocE

@pushmatrix three.js devs: "it's not much, just some WebGL stuff" The stuff: literally rendering global commerce on the world's biggest LED ball at 8K 60fps 7.9K views · 99 likes · 2 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →
For the first time ever threejs was running IN A BROWSER on the biggest screen in the world. But wait, there’s more. We also turned it into the largest realtime shader ball. Want a breakdown of that one? 😛 https://t.co/EnEtW0Z7yg

Each order arc is instanced. It’s a single draw call and we can handle tens of thousands of them at once without breaking a sweat. We stream data using Server-Sent Events, so when someone buys from any Shopify store around the world, it shows up here in under 10 seconds 😱. 17.7K views · 121 likes · 0 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
But how to get this on the Exosphere? Turns out OBS Studio has a Browser source type that lets you output the content of a webpage, at any resolution. We collaborated closely with @SphereVegas to figure out how to ingest that video. To our surprise it was possible! https://t.co

This freed up a TON of compute cycles, which let us do things like realtime cloud shaders and postprocessing. The talented @XorDev worked with us to simulate the entire cloud shader in equirect space. Every setting was easily adjustable. https://t.co/VMNmkHaGjQ

Instead of capturing the scene with a 360 camera then stitching it into equirect… What if we output our vertices directly into equirectangular space. We didn't have a sphere, we had a plane. In the arc vertex shader we converted from 3D position, to lat lng, to equirect. https:

But how can three.js be more performant than our Unreal scene? The trick is equirectangular projection. This is how a flat 2:1 image maps to a spherical surface. https://t.co/vAyH6r4FxZ

We had to render the scene in 3D then capture it with a 360 camera. That meant 6 individual 4K captures stitched together. It struggled to get higher than 30fps. This year we had a wild idea….What if we just did it in the browser with WebGL, three.js and react-three-fiber? 24.6K views · 194 likes · 2 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →
This is three.js running on the Exosphere. 🤯 Rendering in realtime from a browser at 8K / 60fps. Here’s how Shopify just pulled it off 👇 https://t.co/dz1Gv2fgin

Last year we used Unreal Engine for this. Each arc is an order placed in realtime during Black Friday. It was the first time anyone ever did realtime data viz on Exosphere. But working in Unreal was a pain… https://t.co/MQNHTlVkah 43.7K views · 187 likes · 8 reposts · 3 replies Open on X →
BFCM Live on the @SphereVegas And I mean truly live! It turns out that the Sphere can be powered by the Unreal Engine, so of course we had to go there. Place an order from your phone, see it arc in front of you! https://t.co/ecsNIQhVic
