I haven’t bled on the page like this in a while, but when Dolly Parton and Wendell Berry pass in the same week, there’s nothing else to be done. https://t.co/UTM4VxSdNY

A 1930s schedule for a housewife without a servant: cooking, cleaning, mending, shopping and childcare from 7am until 9pm. Even “recreation” competed with ironing. Running a household was a full-time job long before women entered paid work en masse. Source: https://t.co/BeYZ7o1h2

This is picking up so some context:
I grew up in broader Appalachia & regularly went to family reunions where sibling sets were 10-12 a piece. My parents generation shrunk, my generation even smaller. But I grew up knowing my dad’s cousin network.

@sometimesalight people underestimate how much blood can tie you together. it’s a lot easier to lose touch with everyone else.

We can try to replace the lack of family network thru church, chosen family, local community, etc. But it will always be a replacement. It's okay to name that & grieve the loss. It also clarifies when we're asking these other relationships to do work they weren't designed to do.

Which in turn enables us to enter relationships as they were intended. We can receive from church, community, friendships what they can give & set expectations appropriately. We take the left over grief to God & do our best to be present for others grieving the same loss.

I'd even argue that this kind of networked familial bonds are one of the major divides in society. Wealth comes in many forms & capital is one of the lesser ones. Having thick extended family (even if not homogenous in lifestyle, belief, or practice) is essential to stability.

I say this from a place of deep gratitude for my friends & deep grief over loss of extended family relationships. Some of this is endemic to the American experience & some of it is result of individual family story. But Susannah is right that excellent cousins are significant.

not only does "making" friends require a ton of personal resources, it asks something of friendship it isn't really designed to offer. Friends come & go based on proximity & shared circumstance/life. Family are ties you didn't choose & would have to intentionally cut to lose.

I'm convinced that the loss of cousins is an overlooked cause of the loneliness epidemic. In best case, siblings & cousins are peers gifted to you who pace w/ you thru life. W/out them, you have to literally "make" friends, hoping they'll fill the gap but..

Looks like we're going to have some new folks around here. Here's what you can expect:
1) general disapproval of modernity
2) endearing vignettes of bickering w/ my 17yo son about Napoleon
3) love of Appalachia
4) deeply protective of working class
5) probably too ecumenical
