RD: Show up in each other's spaces, in my replies. I'm always excited about people showing up in my replies, disagreeing with me with a jolly attitude. That's very welcome.

RD: I just want people to know that there is actually a ladder of escalation where you go from tweeting into the void to actually building friendships and then going to DMs.

QC: I love getting DMs from people who are like, hey, I liked this tweet you did or whatever. Those are like, nice and concrete... I also would welcome being interacted with like a normal person for any of you who are listening to this.

VV: Thanks for watching, and don't be strangers. If you like us, or like our accounts, or like what we write enough to sit through an hour and a half podcast listening to us shoot the shit, send us messages, come leave replies in our threads.

RD: I was wondering about the 30 or 60 people who have just sat down for over an hour listening to us talk. I wonder if we want to say anything to them.

RD: There's a surprisingly rare way of building belonging around positive values and positive interests and positive experiences and connecting over these things that we like. It doesn't get much airtime, but it's historically the norm for how you form an identity.

RD: I think the intolerance is symptomatic of the lack of social fabric, that people are desperate for belonging. And so they get the cheap junk food version of belonging, which is like, they hate people that are different to them.

VV: You can really only tolerate in others what you can tolerate in yourself, what you've accepted in yourself. It's pithy to say it, but it's true.

QC: People don't arrive at their beliefs out of nowhere. They arrive at their beliefs out of having lived a life in a certain way that causes certain things to be meaningful to them. That is a genuine foundation for respecting people who have very different opinions.

RD: Disagreement built on top of connection is actually where prosperity and wisdom and all the good stuff comes from. It's the difference that's built on top of attunement. That's the good shit, and it breaks my heart that people have missed the mark.

RD: It's not anti-woke, it's not anti-culture war, it's pro-pluralism. It's people who care about pluralism and are willing to do the awkward, uncomfortable work of tolerating people who have different perspectives to get to the juice on the other side.

RD: It has been so encouraging to be in an environment that has somehow cultivated a collective immunity to the culture war. You only notice it by its absence. It's very rare that you even see glimmers of it.

VV: The culture war was a major contributor to this space, in the same way it was for the comments section of Slate Star Codex, or anywhere that people wanted to be able to have open inquiry and intellectual conversations without without being smeared.

@eigenrobot QC: There's a certain kind of apolitical streak to what we talk about... there's not a whole lot, that I know of, moving in the direction of political projects.

QC: I feel like one of the founding principles is, we are not going to get on your case about cultural war stuff broadly. And @eigenrobot is a great example of this, like Eigen will happily talk to people with a wide variety of different political stances.

RD: I think something that large accounts can do and only large accounts can do, in a sense, is push some memes to massive scale.

RD: I think that some of the social norms that we've developed are better than most of the other norms that are competing in the landscape of ideas in the current state of the world. I want to put my shoulder to the wheel.

RD: Maybe we can take our hands off the steering wheel a little bit and trust that there are these environments where people can start getting on that upward spiral and getting those rewards.

VV: Maybe the three of us step up our efforts to really do some of the scene building we were doing early and maybe teach some of the smaller accounts how to do it themselves.
RD: Or encourage the people who are already doing it.

RD: When I think about who I've met in person that had the biggest impact on me and that I'm most delighted about and plan to spend a lifelong friendship with, there's no correlation between the quality of the friendship and the size of their audience on twitter.

@visakanv VV: Maybe we didn't pass down the knowledge that we needed to, to keep this thing generative.
