@tracewoodgrains These aren't the only options though. You can be a weak baptist or benthamite and then you aren't being a hypocrite, you just don't always do what that says. Have multiple moral advisors, do what they say when they agree, sit and think when they don't. Allow th 536 views · 9 likes · 0 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →

"Say what you will about that pastor's advocacy against homosexuality, at least he lived by it and cut his own son off." No! When the advocacy is wrong, enacting it at great cost in his own life compounds that wrong. The principled stand is bad. 2.4K views · 95 likes · 1 reposts · 7 replies Open on X →

Hypocrisy is better than living by bad principles. The Baptist who loves their gay kid, the leftist who lets their child go to a selective school, the Benthamite who helps their friend. Better to change their principles. But until then, let reality sand the sharp edges off. 19.7K views · 502 likes · 21 reposts · 23 replies Open on X →

I don't think that attempting to live by your principles is "virtue signaling" — it's actually virtuous not merely perfomance, it's just that virtue is not necessarily rewarded 58.4K views · 1.3K likes · 67 reposts · 66 replies Open on X →

In 2025, experts gave a 10% chance that any Millennium Prize problem would be solved with AI assistance by 2027, and a 20% chance by 2030. Claude gives a median estimate of 2066 for N-S. I don't care the method, I categorically reject "not impressive"–posting here. https://t.co

Carl Hendrick has long been one of the education researchers I respect most, and I've been excited to see him step into the arena and build with the Alpha School team rather than simply theorize. I'm surprised how many almost seem to be rooting for failure. 4.5K views · 27 likes · 2 reposts · 7 replies Open on X →

On @TheArgumentMag, @SarahEMcBride shares her thoughts on AI: likely the most significant transformation of society since agriculture. Glad to see some seriousness on the topic in Congress. https://t.co/q1JTwAADMA

I think the regulations @helenlewis suggests are mostly sound ones, but I think she misses one of the core ethical questions: How closely should the state be allowed to interfere with individual decisions to parent and to help others become parents? The core is not commercial. ht

This is a very good read from @helenlewis. It seems to me that, at a minimum, there should be limits on the number of children you can commission via surrogacy, upper age limits for intended parents, and bans on surrogacy tourists, not to mention robust regulations to ensure that 20.1K views · 90 likes · 10 reposts · 7 replies Open on X →
