Another fun MacroTalk with @AahanPrometheus this week. Market action, eco data, and policy of the week. Plus a deep dive into commodity risk premiums, monetary policy influence on FX, audience questions, and as usual a few very real ads.

An interesting note from @samjsutton's Morning Money today that just happened to align with a curiously strong employment report that contrasted with much weaker data from ADP & Paychex. https://t.co/bjJ1SaF9ec

@BobEUnlimited This is because Anthropic started blocking or calling into question secondary trades and SPVs in May. You need to look at the betting markets. https://t.co/X8H2AmWW28

Since the summer of '22 I've strived to provide nonconsensus views that would be diversifying to traditional long-only portfolios. '25 was a challenging year, but continued to add value in line with this goal. Check out the blog app for more:

It marked basically the peak in aggregate asset prices which have since chopped sideways through year end. While the trade didn't add value (and few trades did given flat markets in 4Q25), it captured the pretty clear regime shift turning point. https://t.co/JQILXBoQ4e

10/20/2025 | By late October the euphoria across all financial assets had reached a fevered pitch, particularly in gold. In response I replaced the debasement leg with a short position across financial assets relative to cash to fade the mania.

It was the debasement side of the trade that delivered through October while priced in growth traded sideways reflected by stocks vs bonds trading largely sideways. https://t.co/OSCF8S7HMM

8/28/2025 | Jackson Hole marked a turning point in markets and I shifted to reflect the shift with positioning for either debasement or weakness by adding first a short dollar leg and then long gold a couple weeks later.

Euphoria about the first the BBB and then the AI trade continued through the summer, leading to underperformance of the disappointment trade. And the gold leg didn't provide much benefit either as policy looked to be more orthodox than initially expected. https://t.co/M9DPPXXUTr

6/20/2025 | After a month of waiting, the turn in the data suggests it's time to start legging into the season of disappointment trade. Starting with 50% risk on a trade long bonds + gold and short stocks.

The combination of high expectations, softening growth, and a Fed on hold is a classic setup that favors bonds and gold relative to stocks.
While it may take a little while for markets to acknowledge the reality it looks like 2H25 is shaping up to be a season of disappointment.

5/21/2025 | Closed the "Party On, Garth" trade after a pretty big shift in bond yields on the long end. Flat risk at this point while I work on getting a little better read on where we are headed next.

While the "Party On, Garth" vibe has been fun, you always wanna leave the party before the cops show up. Time to close out and go flat risk.

5/12/2025 | Wrecking ball view was a loser. First as hope for a tariff reversal got priced into markets, furthered when China repeal was actually announced. Post announcement, adjusted positions to reflect a pro-growth, larger deficit view.

4/17/2025 | As my thinking evolved about how to more structurally position for the Wrecking Ball policy at hand vs manage tactical swings, built this composite portfolio long bonds vs. stocks, short USD, short US stocks vs. ROW, and long gold.

4/9/2025 | After the stock surge following the delay, I recommended fading the rip that evening. Then suggested to close it around lunch time the next day as it moved heavily in my favor. To a full cash position.

Taken together a "US Wrecking Ball" position mix remains vastly underwater relative to the start of 2020. While the moves have felt large up close, this mix is still only a couple percent higher than in the lead up to the election.
Hardly a scratch given the policy mix today.

Tech stocks are set to party like its 1999 at the open.
Looks like that'll be an opportunity to sell the rip as stocks set to fully price out all negative growth policy from the new admin even as the US still faces a Smoot-Hawley tariff rise, zero immigration, and fiscal cuts. h

Tariff plans scaled back modestly, but markets moved way too much. Stocks vs bonds back to levels just before election. No negative growth policies from the new admin priced in at this point.
Fade the rip: Long bonds vs. stocks at 50% risk to start.

4/6/2025 | Don't get greedy is a good lesson for life and trading. Stocks up 6% and yields up 30bps from this point. Probably should have taken off all of it at the time. Will do so now as hope of tariff reversal will likely fill the air for a bit.

Went full on with the Wrecking Ball trade post Liberation Day announcement. Caught the vast majority of the move since the posterboards showed up.
Classic don't get greedy circumstance in a bear market - time to take the W and close 50% of the trade.

4/3/2025 | While I was flat positioned for Liberation Day given the uncertainties and so missed the initial reaction, pre-market outlined the "Wrecking Ball" policy as good for bonds vs risky assets, bad for the USD, and leading to curve flattening.

Yesterday was further confirmation of the Wrecking Ball mix of negative-growth policies and a slow moving Fed.
This should be good for bonds vs risky/growth assets like stocks, bad for the USD, and drive curve flattening. Similar to the market action since.
Thread.
