Tree no. 17191 Wild cherry (Prunus avium) Wild cherry Medium-sized, fast-growing deciduous tree, native to the UK and Europe. It has a deep-reddish brown bark and cream-coloured lenticels. The oval, toothed leaves have pointed tips and two red glands on the stalk. A hermaphrodite species, it blossoms early in spring and produces white, cup-shaped flowers, pollinated by insects to develop deep-red cherries. The fruit is eaten by several birds and mammals that then disperse the seed in their droppings. A pioneer light-demanding species, wild cherry quickly colonizes glades and clearings. However, it is often outcompeted by other hardwoods later, and is thus extensively used for afforestation of agricultural land. The trees favour full sunlight and moist to well-drained fertile soil, including slightly acidic or calcareous conditions. Wild cherry is susceptible to bacterial cankers, and pruning wounds can allow fungal infection leading to silver leaf disease.

Schematic of several PTMs investigated for their roles in regulating integrin functions. PTMs occurring on integrin β-subunits, including some of their known regulators and adaptors are shown. Integrins span the plasma membrane, with large extracellular domains that bind extracellular matrix (ECM) ligands, and short cytoplasmic tails that serve as platforms for intracellular signalling and mediate binding to the cell cytoskeleton. Glycosylation adds sugars to the extracellular domains via glycosyltransferases and glycosidases. Phosphorylation of conserved tyrosine (Y) or serine (S) and threonine (T) residues in the cytoplasmic tails can regulate the binding of different adaptor proteins and supports the dynamic roles of integrins during cell migration. Some of the known kinases and phosphatases that add or remove these modifications, respectively, are shown. Further PTMs can be made to other cytoplasmic residues, including ubiquitylation (i) or acetylation (ii) of lysine residues (K).
