“Very strong El Niño events like those in 1997/1998 and 2015/2016 were associated with hundreds of billions of dollars in damages globally – this event is leaving those past ones in the dust.”

Sommer 2026: 16.000 Hitzetote 🥵 alleine in 🇩🇪.

It is official now: the new UN report finds we'll cross the 1.5°C warming limit very soon. Now what?
Two months ago we described the range of plausible climate trajectories ahead in this article.
In short: it's like we're stuck in quicksand, where only an active pull can free us.

@rahmstorf @MolderMartin It took ocean biota millions of years to draw down CO2 after the P-Tr mass extinction, after the clathrates went as well. We need to figure out the marine life threshold - where we’re not just hurting ourselves, but risking all life on earth.

Three scenarios discussed in our article illustrate the choices and risks we face. Let's aim for the green one.
We still have a choice, and are not yet destined to bequeath a much less habitable planet to future generations. Our children and grandchildren deserve a fair chance. h

We are in the Age of Humans - the Anthropocene.
Our new article (open access) shows how even with a moderate future emissions scenario, global temperature will still be elevated by 3-4°C in the year 3000!
Lifetime of our CO2 in the air is that long.

@rahmstorf On tipping points, I think this visualization really helps to explain it:

One of the most ominous risks for Europe is that of a major change in Atlantic ocean currents.
Recent science suggests it has been greatly underestimated in the past -including by me, having worked on it for over 30 years.
Here my half-hour presentation in Vilnius a week ago! htt

Is the #AMOC approaching a tipping point? Here's my take after researching this topic for over 30 years. Open access, peer-reviewed, in full colour & understandable for non-experts.

Great visualization of something terrible, a climate tipping point.
This shows how a rainforest can tip into rapid deforestation with longer droughts, as global warming worsens.
Similar tipping points can cause changes in ocean currents and ice sheets👇
