The man who is generally regarded as the most influential figure of the second millennium AD, in terms of how much he changed the western world as we know it, is now buried in an unknown and unknowable location: there is no place to pay homage to Gutenberg and the printing press. 7.4K views · 302 likes · 14 reposts · 11 replies Open on X →

And this month @JSTOR has reduced its monthly allowance of free articles by 90%, from 100 to 10. Why? Meanwhile, the local library has got rid of they physical runs of almost every journal "because they're on JStor anyway". So spend your rationed curiosity wisely, dear reader.... 59.6K views · 2.2K likes · 512 reposts · 42 replies Open on X →

If you just want to read Latin, and don't care how, you can occasionally buy the complete works of the 20 major authors of Latin poetry for £10. https://t.co/elxD08T8A3 10.5K views · 141 likes · 5 reposts · 7 replies Open on X →

Any help with the first line here? It's an inscription that would typically give the owner's name there. But I think it says "... Fund Book", which would suggest that this was a book purchased for Trinity from some fund. But, if so, it's odd to write that, and with TCO appended.

@AntigoneJournal Anna's Archive has an open $200,000 bounty for anyone who "liberates" Google Books, so I think the best hope is some unprecedented security hole at Google or corrupt insider. 18.3K views · 487 likes · 18 reposts · 4 replies Open on X →

@AntigoneJournal We must 1) guard Internet Archive with our lives and 2) download as much as possible from them. But Internet Archive's search feature is a mess. 4.1K views · 120 likes · 2 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →

@AntigoneJournal I have heard so many librarians across so many libraries say "we don't have a physical copy any more but you can easily find it on Google Books". If you point out it isn't there, "it should be, it's why we felt comfortable removing it, we needed space". [Mind, no 7.9K views · 226 likes · 16 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →

Google Books is becoming a desert. Its regress is real: the knowledge we were assured was both safely stored and freely available, which led libraries and schools to get rid of their books, has retreated into the shadows. The internet of 2026 knows less than the internet of 2010. 656.4K views · 9.7K likes · 2.3K reposts · 106 replies Open on X →

Why is Google Books removing access to out-of-copyright books that it once hosted as open access? There is a good chance that the mass-deaccession policy of libraries, on the ground that "it's available for free online", will be one of the most stupid acts of modern curatorship. 1.3M views · 9.4K likes · 1.6K reposts · 158 replies Open on X →
