Celts living and establishing kingdoms in Anatolia? They even took over cities such as Ancyra (modern Ankara) and Gordion (from the story of Alexander the Great and the Gordian Knot). See below for more on this thread about the "Dying Gaul"! https://t.co/TQ4mfvfWX0 2.1K views · 50 likes · 6 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →
I had a bad week. On Saturday, almost at 6 pm, our car broke down in the middle of the road. We live in rural Iowa. It was scorching hot, and our toddler and two-month-old baby were in the car, which was also full of groceries. On Monday, I got rejected from this job I had 4.2K views · 119 likes · 3 reposts · 12 replies Open on X →
@visualsancients I had bookmarked this 6 months ago and finally went to the exact spot. Thank you. https://t.co/ksaaJMKczl 5K views · 18 likes · 0 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →
It turns out there's a Roman column in Buenos Aires! It was excavated in the Roman Forum and donated in 1955 by Rome's mayor's office to Argentina as a friendship symbol to honor Italian immigrants. Made of white marble, it measures 6.2 x 1.8 ft (1.9 x 0.55 m). https://t.co/qsab 2K views · 96 likes · 6 reposts · 4 replies Open on X →
Look at my boys in their corner. Almost ignored by everybody. But "almost" because we are going to give them the appreciation they deserve in my next post! https://t.co/tgVVCNjCRc 4.1K views · 125 likes · 4 reposts · 6 replies Open on X →

While life escapes the face of the "Dying Gaul," he awaits death, not lying on the floor, but holding up his body in his last act of defiance. End. 📸 by me. https://t.co/J64ZSWTcsJ 3.1K views · 39 likes · 3 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →
The remarkable realism of his body posture and face made this piece famous already in ancient times. The bleeding sword puncture, visible in his lower right chest, is another detail not to miss. When it was found in Rome in the early 1600s, its fame returned. Lord Byron https:/ 610 views · 29 likes · 1 reposts · 3 replies Open on X →
However, some elements revealed its true identity: the shield carved on the floor with the carnyx (a Gallic horn), his Celtic hairstyle and moustache, and the Celtic torc around his neck. Ancient Historians such as Diodorus Siculus, Livy, and Polybius tell us of Celtic warriors 389 views · 26 likes · 1 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
In 25 BC, Emperor Augustus incorporated Galatia as a Roman province. Soon after, Paul the Apostle visited the area and wrote to the Christians the famous Epistle to the Galatians. Until the 20th century, this piece was named the "Dying Gladiator." https://t.co/xl45X4nhlL 307 views · 23 likes · 0 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
Shortly after 241 BC, the king of Pergamon, Attalus I, defeated the Galatians in the Battle of the Caecus River. Attalus I adopted the title of "Soter," savior in Greek. In addition to the "Dying Gaul/Galatian," another part of Attalus' monument is the "Ludovisi Gaul." https:// 365 views · 22 likes · 0 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
They consisted mainly of three tribes, the Tectosages, the Trocmii, and the Tolistobogii. The Galatians took control of cities such as Ancyra (modern Ankara, the capital of Turkey/Türkiye) and Gordion (from the story of Alexander the Great and the Gordian Knot). https://t.co/6iBa 414 views · 26 likes · 1 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
They settled in the central region later called Galatia, where they established tribal kingdoms and engaged in warfare, raiding, and mercenary activities against neighboring Hellenistic states. Their presence led to conflicts with the Attalid rulers of Pergamon. https://t.co/eoFT 424 views · 24 likes · 1 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
The original was part of the monument that Attalus I (241 - 197 BC), king of Pergamon, dedicated to Athena Polias after his victory over the Galatians, a Celtic population living in Anatolia. The Galatians were a Celtic people who migrated to Anatolia (modern-day Turkey) in the 580 views · 32 likes · 3 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
The "Dying Gaul," a masterpiece of ancient times in 8 📸s. Currently displayed in the Capitoline Museums in Rome, this is a Roman copy from the 1st or 2nd centuries AD of an earlier bronze statue from the Hellenistic period. https://t.co/oCnuY7MDkr 12.9K views · 372 likes · 59 reposts · 3 replies Open on X →
@visualsancients Great thread! I did one myself a few years ago, before seeing it in person. But in a week and a half, I’ll finally come face-to-face with it. BTW, here’s the official schematic that shows the pigments that have been detected. https://t.co/G2yndQCaON 400 views · 24 likes · 0 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →
Bonus afterword: the details of the second ship as the sailor furled the sail. https://t.co/zaam8g6Uqj 766 views · 62 likes · 3 reposts · 3 replies Open on X →
25/ The sail also portrays two images of the Capitoline she-wolf ("Lupa") and Romulus and Remus. The Portus Relief is truly "a picture worth a thousand words." 📸 By me. 🚨 I hope you enjoyed this thread. 24/ On the sail we can see ropes, metal rings, and the letters VL, which probably means VOTVM LIBERO: votive gift to "Liber Pater," no other than Bacchus himself! Probably, this relief was placed in a temple of Bacchus in Portus. https://t.co/x2U85VQOUY 695 views · 58 likes · 3 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
23/ Sailors are working on the other side. Bacchus appears on the bow of the ship. At this point, you may think that the boat belongs to a wine merchant. Probably, yes. https://t.co/iRkCDgAQpf 665 views · 55 likes · 3 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
22/ On top of the stern, another winged Victoria. Three figures (two bearded men and a woman) sacrifice to the gods. The dating of this fresco is partially deduced from the hairstyle of the woman at the altar, similar to Julia Domna, wife of Septimius Severus (AD 193 - 211). 736 views · 56 likes · 3 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
21/ A naked sailor in a boat helps the ship steer into the harbour. You can see the fish in the water. https://t.co/cCo7NXn8hd 783 views · 57 likes · 3 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
20/ Three figures adorn the stern: a naked female holding a veil surrounded by two small winged figures. Perhaps Venus and Cupids? https://t.co/SmLjTwov0B 739 views · 54 likes · 3 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
19/ Now, to the main object of this relief. The ship moves to the right, representing its entry into the port. There is a chance that this ship and the small one depicted under the eye are the same in two different moments, during entry and offload of merchandise. https://t.co/YT 752 views · 64 likes · 3 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
18/ The bird of Jupiter, eagles carried the soul of the deceased emperor from the funeral pyre to heaven (apotheosis). After this, emperors were deified. https://t.co/kphvTnOdcD 755 views · 59 likes · 3 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
17/ A winged Victoria holding a wreath and standing on a globe crowns the top of the ship's main mast. To Victoria's left, an eagle spreads its wings while holding a wreath. https://t.co/c7sTq7AcBD 807 views · 60 likes · 4 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
16/ On top of the lighthouse, the naked male figure holds a lance or a sceptre while a mantle hangs over his left arm. He is most likely a deified Emperor (Claudius or Antoninus Pius). You can still see red pigments on the lighthouse flame! https://t.co/uWFhGI1Aba 871 views · 59 likes · 3 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
15/ The Claudian lighthouse of Portus, a symbol of the harbour, is behind the left ship. It was built on the artificial island at the entrance of the harbour. According to the Historia Augusta, it was restored by Antoninus Pius (AD 138 - 161). https://t.co/buSKDl60Pe 1K views · 61 likes · 4 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
14/ An apotropaic eye to ward off evil. Eyes were painted on ancient ships to seek safe travels. Below, a man exits a ship carrying an amphora, and three women empty a vessel. Maybe they are nymphs or Bacchus' female followers, the maenads. https://t.co/qTcrMtW36O 975 views · 62 likes · 3 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
13/ On top of an arch, an elephant quadriga led by an unbearded charioteer wearing a long mantle. Crowned with a wreath, he seems to hold a sceptre terminating in a human head (bust). This type of sceptre is also depicted on coins of Domitian's second consulship in AD 73. https:/ 1.3K views · 63 likes · 3 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →
