Look at this from the other side (of someone trying to do long-horizon strategy): you spend most of your time having low status for being "obsessed" with something nobody else cares about, and then can only get points for being early, not for the details of your strategies/ideas, 18.4K views · 172 likes · 13 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
@itaisher @thuddwhirr What’s really influenced me a lot was knowing a bunch of EA’s in the early/mid 2010’s and thinking they were crazy for being obsessed with pandemics and AI only for a pandemic to happen and then AI to happen too. 90.7K views · 1.1K likes · 78 reposts · 20 replies Open on X →
We can't easily evaluate long-horizon strategy, even after the horizon has passed and we can judge in hindsight, because we don't know what the counterfactual world looks like. Maybe the only way to get credit for many strategy ideas is to wait for large-scale high-fidelity 5.4K views · 59 likes · 3 reposts · 5 replies Open on X →
I speculated about memetics being a potential AI safety hazard in a 2003 SL4 post https://t.co/62hmAIwAxp (which also gave an early description of the evolutionary analogy for AI misalignment). Analogies between human safety and AI safety seem a rich field that not many people 7.4K views · 83 likes · 5 reposts · 5 replies Open on X →

@VesselOfSpirit @niplav_site "The fact that no one noticed this issue for over a decade shows that ATA is difficult. If PCEV had been successfully implemented, the outcome would have been massively worse than extinction. I think that this illustrates that scenarios where someone 4K views · 5 likes · 1 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →

@weidai11 I would gently poke at this. Meaningful research is happening. If it looks like meaningful research has stalled and there is no way forward, consider you may be in a metaphysical cul de sac. Whether it is happening fast enough is another question. 5.1K views · 20 likes · 0 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →

One idea is that humans are "aligned" via social status, but this causes an "alignment tax" forcing the smartest humans to work in domains where their results can be evaluated by others less intelligent. Unfortunately, while math is in NP, philosophy is more like EXPTIME. 17.8K views · 158 likes · 10 reposts · 7 replies Open on X →
In 2012 I wrote about making 10⁵ clones of von Neumann as a Singularity strategy, but now I think we should first figure out why he spent more time/effort on math/computing instead of philosophy and long-horizon strategy, which are the real bottlenecks to having a good future. 30.2K views · 166 likes · 12 reposts · 17 replies Open on X →
@weidai11 @RokoMijic I respectfully believe Eliezer’s complexity of value thesis is both wrong and leads to undue pessimism. I wrote a book (Principia Qualia) outlining the natural alternative, formalism. I agree there are many disjunctive ways for the AI transition to go wrong, 8.1K views · 24 likes · 1 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
