why is it so hard to understand the difference between intelligence and empowerment?
the (current) problem is that we are hooking up (empowering) unreliable AI that (because they still lack deep comprehension) cannot be reliably aligned to the internet.
if current systems could

Still can’t build a good frontend.
Still making my own slides.
Still doing my own taxes.
Still not giving it my Slack or bank account.
AGI arrived. But my life stayed the same.

Researchers argues OpenAI and Anthropic will never get us to AGI.
21 top researchers from Stanford, Oxford, DeepMind, CMU & Meta released a paper saying LLMs are a dead end.
It’s called “Visual General Intelligence”. And it completely flips how we look at artificial https://t.c

Your bill is more than a pause @SenSanders – it is a permanent ban on research that might benefit humanity.
I could support the pause; at least this stage I cannot support a permanent ban on research.

It may surprise people to know that I oppose this proposal from Sanders and Casar.
But I do.

Propaganda works. Putin has had over 25 years and total control of the media with brutal crackdowns on any dissent. Trump just has Fox News, some lawsuits, and social media and 38% of Republicans call *Canada* the enemy. Partisanship is a toxic drug.

@GaryMarcus This hits like a hammer: +1 from me.
Just to add, AI needs to sort out COVID also - the smashing of healthcare capacity in every wave is leading to a lot of delayed diagnosis of cancer, and infections can be carcinogenic.

Three thoughts on what really matters:
1. Fuck cancer
2. Friends are irreplaceable
3. The new "Marcus test" for AI is when AI makes a significant dent on cancer
May that happen sooner, much sooner, rather than later.
In memory of my childhood friend Paul.

Anthropic looks more and more like “OpenAI” every day
• Same sort gradual mission shift from safety to corporate
• Increasing use of personal information
• Now actively racing others on capabilities
• Marginal and misleading advertising (eg comparison to GPT-4 rather than
