We reported this story because it quickly became apparent in talking to people around Anthropic that she's an essential, influential person around the company.
We wrote last week about Dario that includes mention of her as a "stabilizing force" for him. Give that a read too:

4) As Amodei's career ascended at OpenAI, Clark sent his research papers to wealthy tech insiders who would be well positioned to invest in his eventual company.
Later, she tried to start a fund to invest in AI startups when he started Anthropic. The fund's name: Mother of AGI

3) Schmidt invested a small amount in her 2nd startup, Female Algorithm Technologies, which wanted to build high-end, female-focused health clinics.
Dr. Dario Amodei, whom had started dating Clark in 2014, was listed on the pitch deck adviser.

2) She started working in the Valley in the early 2000s, with an architecture degree from CCA, and few connections. She hustled to build them, on the sidelines of TED and other conferences.
One early believer was Eric Schmidt, the Google chairman, whom she casually dated.

Findings: 1) One of the few online traces of Clark, b/c of the the Epstein files, is that she tried to raise money in 2011/12 from Jeffrey himself. (He passed)
She was raising $ for a female-focused, high-end porn company, with e-commerce as a revenue model. Ahead of its time.

NEWS: Cami Clark is something like the first lady of Anthropic. But she has had no public profile.
We traced her winding road trying to make it and build social connections in tech.
It's one of the most fascinating untold stories of anyone close to the center of AI.

I visited the home of Richard Rhodes, the author of the book that's becoming essential reading for Anthropic employees and Dario Amodel: "The Making of the Atomic Bomb," a 1986 Pulitzer winner.
The conversation was delightfully surprising.

@coryweinberg Dario is confirm a cult leader and @AnthropicAI is just a cult.
I've said it before and I'll never stop. Anthropic is closer to a terrorist organization than company.
It should be shut down.

5) And a scene from our reporting few have heard: weeks after Amodei's blowup with Trump's Pentagon, he and his wife flew to Florida to see Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump. (Clark is friendly w/ Ivanka) One topic that came up was a possible investment in Anth. Kushner passed.

2) A thread throughout Dario's last decade is intense focus—skeptics would say, paranoia—about security. He went to great lengths to guard info at OpenAI. He thought he might get kidnapped if he went to China.
Now, Anthropic has a bunker like mentality confusing to outsiders.

4) Investors in Anthropic don't have much power. Many were late to the party. As such, Dario is a confusing figure to many. Some don't think he cares about making money. Prospective public investors wish he would "stop scaring people."

3) Employees talk about Dario like you'd talk about a mystic. "He sees the future," one said. "He has the singularity in his head," said another. His twice monthly all hands are "Dario vision quests."
It engenders intense loyalty, as does his honest, freewheeling Slack style.

NEWS: You've read profiles of Dario Amodei before, but not like this one.
Here's some of what I learned from ~6 weeks of talking to insiders, rivals, investors about the unusual man leading of capitalism's greatest success story and pissing off Silicon Valley in the process: ht

1) The most under-reported figure in my profile is Camilla Clark—Dario's wife, almost no public footprint, but a close counselor who's at his side from Sun Valley to private dinners. Early on she explored a role or a fund at Anthropic.

Stephanie Kwok, 62, a Cambodian refugee who built a prosperous livelihood in the Los Angeles area with her husband and three sons, died unexpectedly on January 5.
She soon would have been my mother-in-law.
I have been learning more about her story:
