My daughter is 14, so I feel this in my bones. Also, I believe we need to ground adult conversations about education in the work of adults, not social media posts by teenagers. Because teenagers. Please and thank you, on behalf of every parent of a teenager. https://t.co/IgUSDc 1.2K views · 35 likes · 2 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →
New Student to my district. Gen ed No IEP No Academic Concerns from previous school How can a kid get to 3rd grade with no academic concerns when they can't even add sums to 10? They had 2 minutes, answered 5 questions, only 3 right, answers in wrong spot. How? https://t.co/o 37.4K views · 156 likes · 10 reposts · 44 replies Open on X →

This is also true. I’m certainly not trying to suggest that the majority of college-educated parents have put their college aspirations for their children in reverse. Nonetheless, the attitude shift has come more quickly than I ever would have predicted. 2K views · 3 likes · 0 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →
@karenvaites I’m seeing that affluent parents like to agree with this sentiment but are actually sending their kids to college when push comes to shove. I like the idea, too, but the there is an income ceiling with the trades that’s a hard sell for me. 2.5K views · 9 likes · 0 reposts · 4 replies Open on X →
@karenvaites I’m not seeing that. In my experience, the only college educated, middle class parents ok with trades for their kids is when the parents are first gen college and are BARELY hanging onto the middle class with a data entry job. Even then it’s only for boys. Girls go t 561 views · 21 likes · 0 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →
"AI Cheating Young Adult Luxury Camp" made me laugh out loud. A better reflection of the emotional drivers for sending your kids to college is probably: "Young Adult Finishing School and Network-Building Camp," because hiring has always been who you know more than what you know. 7.3K views · 34 likes · 0 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →
100% true. I'm struck by how many families I know with two college-educated parents embracing non-college paths for their high schoolers. Even in very affluent communities. "If you love your children, let them become plumbers" has been my running joke in these conversations. 94.7K views · 356 likes · 19 reposts · 94 replies Open on X →
I recently introduced myself at an event as: "Hi, I'm Karen, and I'm on a crusade to bring books back into reading curriculum." As it came out of my mouth, I realized how insane it sounds. 44.7K views · 931 likes · 55 reposts · 39 replies Open on X →
