Changing World

UNCHANGING MAN

A CENTURY HENCE

It is fascinating to conjecture what life will be like a hundred years from now, but I feel pretty sure that the most extravagant guesses would, in one respect, fall short of the reality. Material progress will have reached a stage which no one can even imagine. While man himself will remain very much as he is today.

An instrument will allow people to hear and see each other over long distances https://t.co/JAF4WkZaiw
An Example.
"For example by 2026 there will have been invented an instrument whereby one person will be able not only to speak to, but to see, another person over a distance of many miles.

"In this case it will go hard with Mr. A. when he pleads with Mrs. A. to be out late 'in order to visit a sick friend!" The old proverb 'seeing is believing' will come into its own a hundred years hence."

DINNER TABLE

WHAT OF 2026?

In 2026 most probably we shall have no dinners and no dinner tables at all. We shall pause in our work, swallow a tabloid the size of a three-penny-piece, and go on again -- and dinner will be over!

People will read old newspaper clippings https://t.co/1J9zbK5fgA
IN 2026
In "twenty-twenty-six" as our great-ditto-grandchildren will call it, some collector of rare manuscript will exhibit an old newspaper, published in May 1926, giving an account of the first flights by airplane and airship to the North Pole. The value of the clippings will be due to their academic content, or, if our language is too academic, we might say, because of the fact that air transportation will then be so common that the people 100 years hence will wonder why it ever was given front page positions.

Canada will have a population of 100,000,000 https://t.co/ULE4e5WBoR
A Prediction for 2026 A.D.

Sir George Foster predicts that in a century Canada will have 100,000,000 people and will be one of the foremost countries in the world. Long distance prophecy is not always taken seriously. No one now capable of understanding Sir George's prediction will be alive in 2026 to confirm or deny his statement.

Jazz will be replaced by Buzz https://t.co/ng2hBmyaA9
Jazz -- There will be no Jazz in 2026, as it will have been unable to survive more than two thousand official announcements of its death and burial. On the other hand, there will be Buzz -- which will be very much the same thing, only more so.

Big cities will be a thing of the past https://t.co/xMTMrCCy1n
Big cities will be a thing of the past in 2026. The positions of the big cities today are dictated by proximity to farm regions, mining regions and by the structure of land and water routes.
By 2026, it will be possible to locate a food factory or a factory for generating power anywhere. Travel will be chiefly by air.
Therefore, men will no longer ensure the noises and traffic jams and high rents of a London or New York, but will spread out more evenly over the earth in great numbers of smaller cities.
Community by Airplane
Many people will live in the open country, making a daily journey of 100 or 200 miles by airplane just as at present men live in the suburbs and drive eight or ten miles by auto to offices in the city.
Perfection of the helicopter will make it possible for these air-commuters to land easily upon the tops of office buildings.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS HENCE

Life in 2026

Sutton Doctor's Picture of a Medical Utopia

Removal of the tonsils, the adenoids, the appendix, the large bowel and the teeth, in conjunction with the injections of various composite vaccines, would hold out every possibility of curing all bodily ills. Similarly psycho-therapy would both cure and prevent all our mental difficulties and troubles, ranging from matrimonial squabbles to severe neurasthemia, from stammering to actual lunacy, from hysteria to homicidal insanity.

THE WORLD IN 2026 -- STANDING ROOM ONLY
[cartoon of a busy planet]
This earth is going to have a lot more people living on it a hundred years from now. And while conditions never may be quite as bad as this sketch would indicate, they'll be bad enough, David Dietz says, if scientists fail to solve the problems of fuel, transportation and food.

Crime will be treated by doctors https://t.co/BatkLIHaiZ
ILLNESS THE CRIME

Forecast of What May Happen 100 Years Hence.

A forecast of conditions with regard to public health 50 or 100 years hence was made by Dr. Dingle, medical officer for Middlesbrough, in a lecture at Redcar last night.

He had been mentioning the advances made in the prevention of disease and said that, if the same progress continued, instead of a man being hauled before the Bench for getting drunk, he would be prosecuted for being ill. In place of a constable, a doctor would give evidence, probably to the effect that the defendant had forgotten to take his daily vitamin bean; and the offender would no doubt be committed to an institution on where it would be seen that he took his vitamin bean daily until it became a thoroughly established habit.

When those days arrived, immunity from disease would have become so complete that the only causes of death would be senile decay or being knocked down by motor-cars.

Students will eat food made from soy beans https://t.co/KXYVEun6XL
It is not unlikely that the freshmen who enters Technology in the year 2026 will be served food made from soy beans or peanuts and perhaps bananas. Such is the possibility set forth by Dr. Samuel C. Prescott, '94, Head of the Department of Biology and Public Health, in the last of the series of Popular Science lectures arranged under the auspices of the Society of Arts by its Secretary, Professor H.M. Goodwin, '90.

Americans will get rid of elected politicians and enjoy having less money https://t.co/LtaaqYlc3J
AMERICANS A CENTURY HENCE

New York World

In his "Midas", a book of quaint prophecies and reflections just published by the house of Dutton, C.H. Bretherton, an English writer, deals with the Americans of a century hence, who he finds will have have each "three generations of American-born ancestors behind him." He says for one thing:

The one really enormous factor that is going to change the surface of American life in the next few decades is that the American is going to learn that is is better and easier to enjoy a little money than to turn a lot of money into more money still.

The struggle to get rid of the politicians will be spectacular but decisive. He will be replaced by the competitively selected life appointee responsible to his non-political department chief.

The politician being abolished, the cranks and fanatics will have nobody through whom to work.

Breakfast will be summonable by the press of a button https://t.co/UMNsvfyomt
LIFE IN 2026

"PRESS THE BUTTON"

"Domestic service by 2026 will be as extinct as slavery or witchcraft. 'Press the button' will be the order of the day."

This is the opinion of the Rev. Basil G. Bouchier of England. Commenting further on the subject, he says:--

"Every house will be replete with these 'buttons'. Pray heaven you don't press the wrong one, and instead of your breakfast appearing, half a ton of coals is shot out!

"But of course, there probably won't be any coal a hundred years hence. Whether or not the multiplication of inventions of the sort and another is likely to make for connubial happiness is an open question.

Centenarian Businessman Predicted for 2026 A.D.

London Mar 27 -- Men and women 100 years old will be active in business and social affairs by 2026, it is predicted by Sir Kingsley Wood, parliamentary secretary to the British Ministry of Heath. "In the next century there is no doubt in my mind that the average expectation of life will be a hundred years, and a person of seventy-five will be regarded as comparatively young," he said.

MOTORING-- Cars will be wonderfully improved during the next hundred years and you would hardly recognize them as the outcome of our present primitive vehicles. One of the reasons for this is that there will be so many of them that none of them will be able to move.
