As a staff-led union we understand how stressful this moment of uncertainty is. In the run up to a potential government shutdown, we want to share some resources and information for what staff can expect in the event that a CR does not pass by the Friday funding deadline. https:/
CWU Government Shutdown Resources Overview of most recent government shutdowns: 2013, 2018 Who is essential? Thanks to legislation passed in 2019, all full-time Congressional staff will receive backpay after the shutdown is over, regardless of whether or not an employee was furloughed. Each Member and Committee Office is an "employing authority" under House Rules. Employing authorities make the determination of who within their staff is an essential employee and who should be furloughed. Other things to expect: • Limited entries into House and Senate buildings. • Reimbursement Delays: Employees may still accrue reimbursements, and can be reimbursed for things purchased during the shutdown once the government has reopened. • Travel halted for everyone but the Member • Limited custodial services Loans: Visit the Congressional Federal Credit Union Pay: GEFTA requires back pay for furloughed employees Student Loan Payments will lapse Health Care coverage will not lapse
