I guess I'm saying that there is room for most of us to be less judgmental of and have more empathy of people who have problems with substance use. We rarely know the real why or what horrors they carry in their histories.

And yes, I do also know women victim-survivors of child sexual abuse who have not developed problematic substance use, or who have managed to overcome it, but they have always had to learn to leave with and been adversely affected by what was done to them.

I don't know if I have ever known a woman with seriously problematic substance use, whether drugs, alcohol or both, who is not a survivor of child sex abuse, usually perpetrated by family members and not infrequently extending then into successive intimate relationships.

As a practitioner, as a friend to women and also as someone who listens to the feminists who go before me, I knew this already.
