came across a copy of Steven Runciman's Crusades trilogy at the beautiful Galerie Kayseri in Istanbul. began reading it on the way to Heybeliada. I had forgotten how fast the narrative moves, sidesteps complex details of theology, and presses on to convey movement and motivation.

@DalrympleWill in undergrad, I read Chap 1 of Runciman’s Crusades vol 1: The Abomination of Desolation. The opening line was about Caliph Omar riding into Jerusalem on a “white camel”.
