Consequences will both harden the product and reduce the press releases where companies brag about their product flaws.

.@SecScottBessent: "It is humans who are responsible, not the AI. The Hugging Face incident — that is the responsibility of the OpenAI management, not a bunch of agents... These labs need to take responsibility for themselves." https://t.co/A5cUvKvL5c

This is a topic that has been weighing heavily on my mind for over five years. I hope we can find a way for eveyone to move forward with “inquiry” as the true-north. For the best interest of the globe.

Is AI really going to kill us all? The scenarios are preposterous, and the presumption of inevitability encourages fatalism, panic, and distraction from the more mundane and realistic safety challenges. By @clairlemon https://t.co/QFkwoRNHmP

Another great point from @jason. The large closed model corporations have publically admitted their products are defective & can be used to hack/cause cyber crimes. They should 1) fix these issues, & 2) disclose these large (seemingly likely) liabilities in their S-1.

This is spot on. We need to stop listening to fantasies - these people have watched too many marvel movies.

The frontier model companies are responsible for how their products perform in the real world, and their customers are responsible for how they use them.
If a user of Claude runs a cyberattack — especially one at scale — both the customer and the platform will be sued.

I'm not of fan of regulation for two reasons - 1) its hard to get right, and 2) its highly susceptible to regulatory capture. That said, if we insist on doing it, we should try to get it correct.
As "safety" seems is the primary goal of this AI regulation exercise, I wanted to

It was exactly three years ago that I gave this talk on “regulatory capture” at the @theallinpod Summit. I did predict that the large incumbent AI companies would “beg for” regulation. No idea they would beg this hard.

Law enforcers already have authority to charge companies and their CEOs for creating and releasing dangerous, unvetted, or defective products. We shouldn’t let discussions about new legal regimes distract from the fact that there’s no AI exemption from laws already on the books —

I have a recommendation to help bring some sanity to this whole AI doomerism situation that is appropriately exploding today.
If any reporter can get one of the "true believers" to sit for a real interview (if they can't, that is an important tell), they should use a technique

Great piece that helps explain the seemingly contradictory rhetoric emanating from the closed AI model companies. I agree the #1 actionable take is to hold the companies accountable for their product’s behavior.

Open, open, open.
As I wrote in the @washingtonpost, open-models are the inevitable outcome of high stakes software competition. The more at stake - the more likely open wins. This is water running downhill.

This is very good. Ben brings a career of thinking to his views on where we are today.
My favorite part is the beginning. There is no reasonable path to AI global dominance for the U.S. vs the world. It’s a fantastical notion that falls apart when thinking through the details.

No, the underlying economics are not the problem. If we let the market play this out, we will be fine. The only real risk is concentration through regulatory capture. https://t.co/enBrXZvZIe

@bgurley What does it say about a media that shows no interest in this? There aren't many stories more important than Covid in the last 20 years - multiple Pulitzers waiting, but all we get is "nothing to see here" - the evidence of has been there the whole time and people were
