For anyone thinking about immigration policy, I recommend this year-old piece by Michael Kazin: "How the GOP’s Hard Line Will Make America More Pro-Immigrant, Not Less." https://t.co/we5otoVgkN https://t.co/1kDFIAv6mM

@DLeonhardt They also forced immigrants to become Danish and did not adopt the same multiculturalism approach as other European countries.

The numbers matter too. The two countries that border Denmark — Germany and Sweden — each have a foreign-born population of 20%, not 12%.
Germany and Sweden have weak center lefts and strong far rights. Denmark has a center-left government and a hobbled far right.

"Today [2024] 12.6% of the population is foreign-born, up from 10.5% [in 2019] when [center-left] Frederiksen took office."
That's ~0.4% of total population increase in the migrant stock *each year.*
A sign, perhaps, that what matters is to get the rhetoric right?

Indeed. The UK Labour Party won last year partly by criticizing the Tories for being too lax on immigration.

Immigration is now roiling politics in the U.S., Canada, Australia, South Africa and Europe. The left's recent strategy -- lecturing working-class voters and ignoring the burdens on their communities -- hasn't worked. Denmark points to an alternative. https://t.co/wsGeOyhueh

Consider this: Around the world, there is not one clear example of a country that has accepted large numbers of newcomers in recent decades while marginalizing the far right and reducing inequality.

As Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told me, immigration is the #1 reason that the Danish left still governs even when the left is in retreat almost everywhere else.

The key difference between Denmark's center-left and the center-left in the U.S. and much of Europe is that Danish progressives listened to working-class voters on immigration -- and reduced immigration levels.

The Danish Social Democrats have also:
* Spent more on Ukraine aid, as a share of GDP, than any other country.
* Reoriented the retirement system to be more progressive and more favorable to lower-income workers.
* Cracked down on housing speculation by private equity.

First, it's worth emphasizing just how progressive Denmark's center-left party -- the Social Democratic Party -- is:
* It's expanded abortion access, both earlier in pregnancy and for teens.
* It's passed among the world's most ambitious climate laws, on agriculture...

The left has lost power in the U.S., Germany, Italy and Sweden. Canada and Australia may be next. And the far right is growing across the West. But there is one European country where the left has won re-election and marginalized the far right: Denmark. Why? 🧵

My book is called Ours Was the Shining Future: The Story of the American Dream. It is a history, and it is an argument about how to create a better America. It's out Oct. 24. I hope you will consider pre-ordering it.

If you’re tempted to give up on our political system as hopelessly rigged, I would urge you not to be. Every successful political movement of the past century did not give up on the political system. It set out to change that system.

I like the term “democratic capitalism” because it captures the symbiotic relationship between the two ideas under the best of circumstances. Democratic governance prevents the excesses of capitalism, while rising living standards foster the good will on which democracy depends.

My basic argument is that the past century has seen a struggle between democratic capitalism and rough-and-tumble capitalism. Democratic capitalism respects both the power and the weaknesses of the free market. Rough-and-tumble capitalism keeps taxes low and regulation light.

How did this happen? I tell that story too – through a different set of historical figures, including Robert Bork, Anne Gorsuch and George Meany. And I loved the process of learning about their lives as well.

Over the past half-century our society has abandoned working-class people – of all races – in crucial ways. Their incomes have stagnated, as has their life expectancy. They no longer trust either political party or other institutions. They are frustrated, with good reason.

… Others are better known, but I don’t think their full importance is understood. One example: A. Philip Randolph, the labor and civil rights leader who understood how to amass and wield political power for the benefit of millions of Americans. https://t.co/UN4MM4CqWB

The inspiring parts of my story are full of heroes. And learning about their lives was one of the joys of writing this book. Some are not very well known (like Grace Hopper and Paul Hoffman).... https://t.co/LF4rAQVwc4

The story that I tell is a difficult one at times. There is plenty of reason for outrage. But there is also reason for hope, for resilience, and for confidence that Americans have the power to create a better society than the one we now have. Why? We have done it before.

I’ve spent the last several years writing a book that tries to make sense of how our country has gotten here – and what we can do to set ourselves on a different path. I hope you’ll read it.

I consider this chart to be the clearest indictment of our country’s path over the last several decades: In 1980, the U.S. had a typical life expectancy for an affluent country. Today, the U.S. has the lowest life expectancy of any affluent country: https://t.co/GhUIn9fzdb
