Launched on Sept. 5, 1977—16 days after Voyager 2—Voyager 1 quickly overtook its twin as they journeyed to explore the outer solar system. Today Voyager 1 is the most distant human-made object, and on Nov. 18, it will reach another historic milestone: one light-day from Earth.

Two for two! 🙌 After the Viking 1 lander touched down on Mars in July 1976, America logged its second successful Mars landing 50 years ago today when Viking 2 arrived at Utopia Planitia. The lander captured images, analyzed soil, and completed experiments in search of life in h

You might know that the Lockheed U-2 high-altitude aircraft had a pivotal role in Cold War surveillance, but did you know that NASA acquired two U-2s in June 1971 for scientific research? OTD 55 years ago, NASA completed its first data-acquisition flight with the U-2, kicking ht

@NASAhistory @NRO_gov “First rule in government spending: why build one when you can have two at twice the price?” - S.R. Hadden. So any hint of the use of the OTHER mirror? 😉 4K views · 45 likes · 1 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
@NASAhistory @NRO_gov Those leftover spy mirrors sat unused until one became Roman's window on the sky. It has Hubble's diameter with a much wider view, like swapping a backyard telescope for a picture window. What spare garage part have you put to a better job than the original 3.5K views · 15 likes · 0 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →
@NASAhistory @NRO_gov Bro I'm dying. Two NRO spy mirrors just sitting in storage and now one's hunting exoplanets. Wild. 🤪 909 views · 8 likes · 1 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →
DYK the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope got an unexpected boost in 2012, when @NRO_gov gifted NASA two unused spy telescope mirrors? One of these mirrors was repurposed for Roman, enabling a wider field of view for its exploration of dark energy, exoplanets, and astrophysics.

Today we remember mathematician Katherine Johnson, born in West Virginia OTD in 1918. In 1953, Johnson began working as a human computer for the NACA (NASA's predecessor), performing complex calculations for flight research. Over her 33-year career with the agency, she worked on

One giant leap for mankind History was made on July 20, 1969, when Apollo 11's Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first to set foot on the Moon. For more than 5 decades, the total number of moonwalkers has remained at 12. NASA will change that with Artemis IV. https://t
