This week's Billington Cybersecurity Summit in D.C. kicked off with warnings from government and industry leaders that AI shouldn't distract from cyber basics. "Resist the breathless rush to grab the sexy new tools." My story: https://t.co/gN0pKijDEq https://t.co/5jbQm2fzm5

@ericgeller I spoke with them last week and was told what you're reporting here. This is devastating. I'm not happy about it. Having them on site is really critical for a lot of organizations. 79 views · 4 likes · 0 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →

@ericgeller There is no shortage of frameworks. There is a shortage of people to walk operators through them. 8 views · 0 likes · 0 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →

"This is a deeply dangerous time to be scaling back direct assistance," one cyber expert told me. "The end result will likely be an increase in the nation's overall cyber risk," another one said. Read my new story: 4.1K views · 48 likes · 21 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →

Resharing my scoop. Interesting window into tensions inside CISA b/w staff in CSD, based in DC, and IOD, spread across the US. “It has been hard on the IOD side,” said one person familiar with the matter. IOD field staff sometimes struggle to keep up w/ what's happening at HQ. 2.7K views · 9 likes · 4 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →

For CISA's part, acting CSD head Chris Butera says eliminating the "legacy assessments" will "reduce redundancy for CISA and organizations requesting an assessment." "CISA routinely evaluates our services and tools to make necessary changes to improve,” he said. 448 views · 5 likes · 0 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →

"I don't know if [acting CISA Director] Nick Andersen truly understands what the fallout will be if he truly decides to prevent us from doing these assessments," the person familiar with the matter told me. 517 views · 6 likes · 0 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →

There are also some internal CISA tensions behind the elimination of these assessments. CSD develops the tool that they run on and analyzes its data, but IOD's field staff uses the tool in engagements w/ partners. CSD doesn't want to support the tool anymore. IOD is not happy. ht

CISA's been scaling back services as Trump admin slashes staff, & this latest move has further inflamed tensions. "It’s just so damn depressing," a person familiar with the matter told me, "when [leaders] don’t have a clue how hard it is to help stakeholders without any tools." 412 views · 9 likes · 2 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →

CISA says these "legacy assessments" are no longer necessary because infrastructure operators can just reference the Cybersecurity Performance Goals. But experts say the CPGs aren't a replacement for the discontinued assessments, which involved hands-on guidance from CISA staff.

Scoop: CISA is ending six free cybersecurity assessments for critical infrastructure operators, significantly reducing the hands-on guidance it offers to those organizations even as it tries to rebuild and reassert its value: https://t.co/VJeinZvjOu https://t.co/pUIqCxId44

Whether or not you love Star Wars stories that focus on villains, I hope you'll enjoy @hothtakes's new episode. It's all about why some of these stories work and some of them don't. https://t.co/aC0jRPryuK 2.1K views · 2 likes · 1 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →
