I just heard someone say "load-bearing" in the wild for the first time. Will be hard to contain this now even if we ground all flights to/from SF. 798 views · 17 likes · 0 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
The inverse dark room problem for free energy minimisation (from my commentary on Anil Seth's biological naturalism). https://t.co/NEso8EDUVr
The “dark room problem” has been much discussed: organisms do not generally hide in dark caves even though this renders the external environment maximally predictable (Sun & Firestone, Reference Sun and Firestone2020). Fristonians have a fair comeback: staying in the cave renders the internal environment increasingly unpredictable because you cannot maintain homeostasis when starving (Seth et al., Reference Seth, Millidge, Buckley and Tschantz2020). But to this we can add the inverse dark room problem: organisms sometimes do starve to death in dark caves when it serves their inclusive fitness interests. Female octopuses do this to protect their eggs (Wang, Reference Wang2023). The only way to make sense of why organisms sometimes prioritize homeostasis and sometimes prioritize something else (such as mating opportunities, offspring, or other relatives) is through the principle of inclusive fitness maximization. 1/3 Conscious AI and Biological Naturalism. A veeery loooong time in the making, but I'm happy to say that the full collection is now out in @BBSJournal 🔥 I deeply thank all commentators - of fifty commentaries! - for their wise, broad, and deep opinions on this critical topic.

Reminds me of the story about Schopenhauer owning a series of poodles - all of them called "Atman". 804 views · 10 likes · 0 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →

If you want to know what has everyone at the AI labs spooked, it’s this - the AI rewrote its own instructions. (Read the last line.) https://t.co/ufmaMBa4iN

Once we cure ageing, presumably pets could get the same treatment. But that introduces complications. Obviously no one wants their pets to die, but getting a dog hits different when the dog is immortal. 9.8K views · 245 likes · 5 reposts · 48 replies Open on X →
@birchlse If the entire internet shuts down we are going to have much bigger problems than not knowing how to get to your best friends house. https://t.co/E6e7Du5Jvm

@birchlse I was having this conversation this morning about how much I can realistically delink from the internet, because this is real, and it’s going to be a mess. At the very least, people should be thinking seriously about what they have sitting in their email and cloud accou 6.2K views · 107 likes · 15 reposts · 14 replies Open on X →
@birchlse I’m not convinced that taking those steps will prepare me for what will happen if the internet goes down. At the very least I need to stuff some money under my mattress and install a security system (not connected to the internet of course) to protect it. 3.5K views · 30 likes · 0 reposts · 1 replies Open on X →
