As most collections have fabricated holder counts, or many inactive holders... the merge allowed the ecosystem to recognize an accurate active holder count.

The merge is the first of it's kind.
The team pre-minted all NFT's (ERC721A standard) one-by-one instead of batch minting (costing 18x more gas). However, these gas fees were passed on as savings to holders using the merge mechanism.
Apes have been merged for under $0.30c each.
