When I met @gpusteve and @gpuemi 18 months ago, they were undergrads at UChicago who weren't planning to start a company. Today they're announcing their $40M Series A. This is how they got there.

If you don't have a frontier AI agent that lives in your slack and responds like a coworker, you should get one, it's incredibly useful.
Opentag lets you put an agent in your Slack and stay flexible on what model powers it.

You might've heard of @OpenAI, @OpenRouter, @opencode
We're excited to launch @TryOpenTag : the model-agnostic Claude Tag.
If you've seen Claude Tag, you know the interface. Tag an AI in Slack, hand it a task, get the result in the thread. We think that's the right interface.

The goal is audacious: open 100 Corgi Cafes this year around the world.
This is the challenge of a lifetime. It hasn’t been easy...and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
I’m all in. Every city. Every cafe. Whatever it takes.
We’re just getting started. 🐶🧡 https://t.co/C4B57G3lm

@snowmaker @paulg Your agents can sign up on https://t.co/WOLV3nJe5S via API and request anything to be done.

@snowmaker Actual real companies want the opposite of this, why do you want your signups full of bots?

@snowmaker I don’t think having AI bots sign up for your service will end up being desirable

Even the best developer tools mostly still don't let you sign up for an account via API. This is a big miss in the claude code age because it means that claude can't sign up on its own.
Putting all your account management functions in your API should be tablestakes now.

@snowmaker Thank you for this thread. Answered a lot of wondering thoughts. 🫡
Hope you write one for people who are not students, but still have the same desire!

/20 One of the most common questions we get is "how much traction do you need to get into YC?" The answer is "none". Most of the companies YC funds are idea stage or prototype stage.

19/ A lot of international students on visas weren't sure if they could do a startup and stay in the US. Fortunately, while YC can't solve every problem for founders, this one we can. When international students get into YC, we can almost always fix their visa issue.

18/ Here's a crazy stat. In the most recent batch of YC, we funded more ex-Stripe founders than ex-Google founders, despite the fact that Google has 27 times as many employees as Stripe.

16/ My colleague @KatManalac made this fascinating infographic of how YC's top companies met their co-founder. College friends are by far the biggest source. https://t.co/GIuQ2zsnm3

17/ If your goal is to be a founder someday, but you're not ready, you're way better off working for at startup than a big tech company in the meantime. You will learn more relevant skills, pick up startup culture, and meet other people who are more interested in startups.

14/ Here's the downside: The best source of cofounders is your college friends. When people work for awhile and then try to start a company, it's often harder to convince their friends. By then, their friends have settled into being employees or moved to a different city.

15/ So, a good default plan for students who are serious about doing a startup is to see if you can line things up to do it as your first thing after you graduate. It's no coincidence that so many of the founders YC funds are exactly 22 years old.

13/ A lot of students think it would be better to work somewhere for a few years first, get some experience, build up their savings, etc. Those are reasonable considerations, but there is a downside to this path that isn't obvious.

11/ Doing a startup right when you graduate is a particularly natural time. You have a moment in your life when your status changes automatically, from student to non-student. It's just as natural for it to change from student to founder as from student to employee.

12/ You don't have to quit anything to do a startup when you graduate. And if it doesn't work out, it just becomes your first job, and you go get another job. Also, it's likely that your best potential cofounders are all graduating at the same time.

10/ Dropping out should be an edge case. There's usually no rush to do a startup, so you may as well just wait until you graduate. One of the few good reasons to drop out is if you and your cofounder are just not liking school. Another might be if some project takes off.

8/ Building and launching your own products, end-to-end, is especially important experience to have. Building software at large companies means tweaking features of large existing products. That's a very different skill from launching your own stuff.

6/ A lot of the best startups from college students don't begin as "startups". They start as friends kicking around ideas or hacking on something, and it naturally grows into a startup.

7/ (h/t to @eshear for this one) Startups are not a thinking game, they are a doing game. If you don't have good startup ideas now, the way to get better ones isn't to think really hard - it's to build stuff and launch it and learn from what happens.

3/ Because cofounders are the critical ingredient, it's often better to start with a cofounder than an idea.

5/ Instead, try going cofounder first. Talk to some of your friends who are startup-inclined, and see who would be up for brainstorming startup ideas. If you come up with an idea together, you'll both feel ownership in it.

4/ Many people think that if they want to start a company, the first thing to do is to go find a startup idea. Then, after they've found an idea, they try to recruit their friends to work on it, only to find their friends aren't excited about the idea.

Yesterday we hosted 400 top university students at the YC Summer Conference - a fun day of talks about startups. Talking to the students afterwards, I found myself giving a lot of the same advice. So in case it's useful to others, here is my startup advice for students. https:/
