@TinyWriterLaura I said the same thing- it felt like outright self sabotage by the Committee because the recommendations were absolutely reasonable AND kept the bill intact. However, observing the conduct of Leadbetter she does her cause no favours 213 views · 8 likes · 0 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →
@TinyWriterLaura @GarethDennis none of these are reasonable safeguards. they are designed to block and make provision impossible. how is the burden one a reasonable safeguard? who is meant to assess that? how? 531 views · 7 likes · 0 reposts · 3 replies Open on X →
@TinyWriterLaura as a member of the public i'd like the names and addresses of the people who voted down some of this stuff -for reasons- 315 views · 6 likes · 0 reposts · 0 replies Open on X →
especially because these are the safeguards that were voted down. the bill couldn’t have been more dangerous if they’d deliberately designed it to kill disabled people - the public should be asking why so many of its supporters ruined the bill by refusing reasonable guardrails ht
Screenshot of safeguards that were refused for the bill showing that the proposed bill would have: assumed mental capacity without the patient having to demonstrate it, allowed ‘undue influence’ over someone choosing to die, allowed someone to die if they felt like a burden to others, didn’t mandate meeting with a palliative care specialist, said the 6 month prognosis didn’t have to have reasonable certainty, said that mental capacity didn’t have to be beyond reasonable doubt, said doctors could bring up assisted suicide first even if the patient never asked, said the doctor didn’t need to consult experts in the patient’s condition before killing them, said the drugs used didn’t have to have received MHRA approval, said hospices & care homes can be defunded for not offering suicide, said suicide can be allowed due to structural pressure of poverty, said people with Down syndrome can be killed
