Fuchs argues that the evidence for interventions is stronger and higher quality than the evidence for inclusion. (8/8) Read rebuttals from other scholars here: https://t.co/BhbQIIe66t

Quality matters. A great version of inclusion where the general ed teacher is trained to accommodate disabilities will clearly outperform a chaotic separate, self-contained classroom, where students aren't getting much academic content at all. (5/8)

Conversely, a great form of separate instruction, where students are getting the intensive services and interventions that they need will clearly outperform a bad version of inclusion where the general ed teacher is untrained and overwhelmed. (6/8)

Great versions of either option -- inclusion or separate -- aren't that common in the real world. The public policy Q is where to invest: improve the gen ed classroom for all OR in reading and math interventions that might need to take place in separate classrooms. (7/8)

It's not proof that inclusion is better if higher achieving students end up with higher test scores. You'd expect that. Just like you'd expect Harvard students to score better on the LSAT than community college students. That's not proof that Harvard is superior. (3/8)

Of course, you may care more about other outcomes like psychological and social benefits of learning with peers who are not disabled. This was a narrow review of the academic benefits. (4/8)

Sometimes the majority of studies in a field can point in one direction and yet the studies can be similarly flawed. That's what Doug Fuchs @vupeabody argues in a forthcoming article in the Journal of Learning Disabilities about the evidence for special ed inclusion. 🧵 (1/8)

The critique is that higher achieving children with disabilities tend to spend more time in gen ed classrooms, while children with more severe disabilities tend to spend more time in separate classrooms. The students aren't randomly assigned between the two settings. (2/8)
