No matter how young or old you are, ageism in the workplace is an issue we ALL need to bang the drum about. Why? Because at some point, we will all become older workers!

I know from my own followers that so many midlifers have an unpaid ‘side hustle’ of caring for elderly parents and grandchildren. This is yet another financial pressure that disproportionately falls on women’s shoulders.

Starting salaries for those who switch careers and retrain may well be lower than what they’re used to. You might have to go backwards to go forwards in pay terms, and not everyone can afford to do this. But maybe, we can't afford not to plan for this?

As ever, it's not just about the money. A poll by Brave Starts, a non-profit that helps 45-65 year olds switch careers, found that older workers valued flexibility over pay (check out their website here - https://t.co/8lkyxAT9wf

According to the ONS, 48 per cent of self-employed individuals in the UK are aged 50 or older. This is the highest proportion in a decade and an 18 per cent increase over the past 10 years. But as freelancers will attest, it's also financially precarious way to earn a living.

Over 15mn people in Britain are not saving enough for retirement. Most are relying on extending their working life to make ends meet. But if employers and recruiters are writing us off in our 40s, what chance do any of us have of working into our 60s or 70s?

A “portfolio career” has long been the aim of City professionals pushed out of high-flying jobs, but developing multiple income streams is fast becoming the norm for older jobseekers of all backgrounds, says Professor @lyndagratton author of Living the 100-Year Life.

I fear the greater threat from AI is the speed at which it is disrupting the labour market. How many of us can truly say we’re not terrified of losing our jobs? What is happening to Stacey and tens of thousands of others could just as easily happen to us.

Following their advice, Duguid’s “newly botoxed CV” no longer displays her age. She’s chopped off 20 years of work experience in a bid to counter algorithmic ageism, and launched a campaign for change: https://t.co/IMZiLkx393

Many blame automated AI-driven recruitment processes for screening out older candidates. Ultimately, however, the algorithms reflect the inherent ageism of *humans* involved in the hiring process.

The responses show how ageism is silently wrecking the finances of (male and female) job seekers in midlife. Highly experienced professionals selling their homes after burning through savings, investments and accessing pensions early as they can't find their next role. Terrifying

THREAD: The days of a job for life are gone.
Now, even a job for midlife is no longer a certainty.
This presents a silent but deadly threat to retirement as we know it. (I felt this justified my first thread on X for a bit of while - hope you've missed me! ) 🧵
