Who is the goat? To me it's Leo. Not basing it on results (I do not study result stats), but on how impressive I personally think what he has done is.
If we're talking about impact on the metagame right now, it's hard to argue against what Acola has introduced.

For my personal competitive journey, Leo shaped my playstyle, and Sparg0 redefined it. What Acola has done is... not really relevant to it, unfortunately. I think many people feel the same way, at least in the west, so they do not give Acola his laurels.

usually SHFF. The characters that don't have to, need to have extreme tools to keep up with the characters who can.
Acola really pushed how far this parallel meta approach can be taken. Imo this is reflected in the community sentiment as well. He introduced the modern era.

I think SHFF is particularly centralizing in Ultimate's engine and esp Sparg0 highlighted that (though the sentiment was there since release), and creates for a less nuanced engine than many other Smash titles, shifting focus from 'what' you do to 'how' you do it, since what is

Steve, G&W, Min, Kazuya, etc. These characters always existed (Pac-Man, Maister's GnW, Snake ofc) but were seen as niche, rather than centralizing. This to me is representative of modern FG design: do not design dense and complex interactions. Rather, design characters that

Many modern fighting games design this way, with a focus on letting the player feel powerful before they have to interact with intricacies to make onboarding easier. I think Steve is the poster child for that within Smash. Not to say the Ultimate engine is particularly intricate,

rely mostly on what they want. If you create a lot of depth and nuance in what they want and you make that powerful, you make the initial learning curve straight forward (you explore your tools regardless of the opponent) and more linear (outcomes generalize regardless of opp).

Finally there's Acola, who kind of created his own void centered around Steve, and with it Steve-esque characters (characters that play extremely asymmetric styles due to overcentralizing tools that rely less on engine-related concepts but more-so on character-specific concepts).

is very close to the essence of what Ultimate is. I'm also suspicious that Sparg0's playstyle might've been more optimal for Smash4 as well, but at the time we had nobody who could usurp the existing play patterns the way Sparg0 did to Ultimate. This, to me, is the initiative era

I will be frank, it took me a while to fully 'get' why Sparg0 was succeeding. I was so enamored with Leo's playstyle (I even modeled my Shulk after his Joker play) and within that frame of reference, Sparg0 just did not compute. And he kept succeeding. I feel like Sparg0's play

Sparg0, who revolutionized an extremely defined metagame. Also an unthinkably impressive achievement. Creating something from nothing is one thing, but drawing outside of established lines AND beating people who have been collectively improving within those lines is mind blowing.

niche, like Gluto or Nairo/Marss/Light (whose playstyles are seemingly traceable to e.g. Raflow or Zomba) which is impressive, but regardless were forced to converge their styles around Leo. I call this the fundies era because, well, everything built on this.

In a time where most people were lost, Leo was extremely confident, beating people with Ike and later on even Byleth. The duration of his reign was insane. Imo this was very comparable to ZeRo's Smash4 dominance. There were other players during this era carving out their own

Leo, who, when the game was just out, defined a whole metagame. He did not do so single handedly, but he mastered concepts within Ultimate in ways that nobody did and in absolutely no time. This, to me, is the most impressive feat of anyone in Ultimate's history.

Since we're discussing the 'goat' of Ultimate, as someone who studied the game and engine for a living here are my two cents. To clarify, I am very much biased but I do think I can justify my bias LOL
Imo there are three eras of Ultimate, and one 'herald' each;
