So this isn't about "traditional" v "modern" architecture; it's about what local people prefer and need, as opposed to the interests of the developer.

Nonetheless, small changes would improve the proposal, like alleviating the oppressive grid of rectangles or giving the corner tower a little bit more identity, perhaps with something evocative of a turret rather than terminating in a cube.

In response to criticisms the developer agreed to use red sandstone and zinc roofs to help the block match buildings nearby.

And that's the strangest part: if new developments were designed in a way that local people loved and matched the area, there'd be way less opposition.
You've even got a beloved local building (i.e. the church!) that could inspire the new design.

It always feels heartless to demolish old buildings like these.
The streetscape, familiar to generations, will be irrevocably changed by the new development.
Still, sometimes streets do have to evolve... which should be an opportunity to do something wonderful!

Even if Hillhead Church simply had to be demolished, and maintaining its façade wasn't possible either, that opens up the question of what should replace it.
The proposed development is much less bad than most of what gets built, but Glasgow deserves better than "much less bad"!

Something similar should be happening at Temple Works in Leeds; this was the largest flax mill in the world when it opened in 1840, and its counting house was designed to look like the Ancient Egyptian Temple of Horus at Edfu.

It was given listed status in 1970 and concerns over its condition were raised in 2000.
In 2004 the congregation left and it bounced between proposed developers (deteriorating all the while) until 2017, when the current developer took over.

The Hillhead Baptist Church in Glasgow, built in 1883, is not an extraordinary historical building.
It's a typical and relatively plain neoclassical (using the word colloquially) church, made of stone.
