So this isn't about "traditional" v "modern" architecture; it's about what local people prefer and need, as opposed to the interests of the developer.
A design that preserves the character of what it replaced would, if the church really has to be demolished, surely be best. http

Nonetheless, small changes would improve the proposal, like alleviating the oppressive grid of rectangles or giving the corner tower a little bit more identity, perhaps with something evocative of a turret rather than terminating in a cube.
It doesn't really fit in at all. https

And it could've been much worse; the photo below is the original proposal.
In response to criticisms the developer agreed to use red sandstone and zinc roofs to help the block match buildings nearby.
Perhaps, though, the problem isn't the new block; it's the demolition. https:/

And that's the strangest part: if new developments were designed in a way that local people loved and matched the area, there'd be way less opposition.
You've even got a beloved local building (i.e. the church!) that could inspire the new design.
Instead it's just... generic. h

It always feels heartless to demolish old buildings like these.
The streetscape, familiar to generations, will be irrevocably changed by the new development.
Still, sometimes streets do have to evolve... which should be an opportunity to do something wonderful!

Even if Hillhead Church simply had to be demolished, and maintaining its façade wasn't possible either, that opens up the question of what should replace it.
The proposed development is much less bad than most of what gets built, but Glasgow deserves better than "much less bad"!

There are also these flats in London, where the portico of a 200 year old chapel was kept, not even as part of the new apartment block built behind it, but simply as a charming landmark and a reminder of the street's history. https://t.co/7Fb3P1uRin

Or there's this one on Leicester Square, which was gutted but retained its façade, thus preserving the square's (partly) historic character.
Something that would have been ideal in a city with as rich a heritage as Glasgow. https://t.co/7SIBrMxwTz

@culturaltutor Unfortunately you have to learn when something is beyond the value of saving. It seems this one is beyond repair. Is there special significance in the building or economic value in restoration?

But they're not all quite so dramatic.
This building in Mayfair is in the process of being totally refurbished internally, with the façade preserved by scaffolding while works continue. https://t.co/bV0TMsfOvQ

Demolishing a building's interior but retaining its façade is increasingly common in Britain; perhaps the most famous example is the old entrance of the Lloyd's Building: https://t.co/et3ZZpCcm2

People like it when new and old are mixed together, keeping the best of what we've inherited, repurposing it in imaginative ways, and using modern inventions to make it more convenient.
Like these former public toilets in London, which have been converted into a café! https://t.

Hillhead Church isn't as extraordinary as any of those, but it's still got a striking and altogether grand façade, so any new development which reused it would inevitably have lots of character.
And, indeed, this was the very first proposal: https://t.co/dIXb8wXz8s

Then there's something extravagant like these former gasometers in Vienna, built in the 19th century and used for decades until being converted into apartments.
Any new design which reuses an old structure inevitably looks very, very cool. https://t.co/ZMej8BwbpW

Something similar should be happening at Temple Works in Leeds; this was the largest flax mill in the world when it opened in 1840, and its counting house was designed to look like the Ancient Egyptian Temple of Horus at Edfu.
It's being converted into a library. https://t.co/1C

And then you've got something like Templeton-on-the-Green (also in Glasgow), a carpet factory designed to look like the Ducal Palace in Venice.
The carpet factory has shut down, but the building has been converted into flats, offices, and a brewery. https://t.co/owMU9oniIj

And the same is even true of old industrial buildings; hundreds of Victorian warehouses or mills across Britain have been converted into apartments, offices, and shops.
Buildings which were, in any case, much less pretty or lovingly designed than Hillhead Baptist Church! https:/

Countless historical buildings, even ordinary ones, have been repurposed in wonderful and thrilling ways.
There are dozens of churches across Britain that have been converted either into single homes or multiple flats.
Like St Clement's Church on Arundel Square, London: https:/

The previous proposal (which didn't involve demolishing the church) included 29 flats; the new one has 32.
But over 300 objections were lodged, demolition was delayed, and a hearing was held; two days ago the Council voted to go ahead with demolition.

The problem is that restoring the church, or even just maintaing its façade, has been declared economically unviable (that is, rather than impossible) by the developer.
Investing in a demolition and then building something new appears to be the best financial decision. https://t

It was given listed status in 1970 and concerns over its condition were raised in 2000.
In 2004 the congregation left and it bounced between proposed developers (deteriorating all the while) until 2017, when the current developer took over.
The roof was removed in 2022. https:/

The Hillhead Baptist Church in Glasgow, built in 1883, is not an extraordinary historical building.
It's a typical and relatively plain neoclassical (using the word colloquially) church, made of stone.
But it's still rather pretty and it's been around for a very long time. http

This 143 year old church in Glasgow is going to be demolished and replaced with a block of 32 flats.
New homes are needed, but this is surely not the way to do it. https://t.co/1tpQF0vja4
