For them, win-win means that both Russia and the US win. Or, more accurately, both Russia and the Trump inner circle.

That has always been very obviously the case for Trump and his circle - from every public statement, draft agreement, and report about what's gone on behind closed doors. And if it was about actual peacemaking, not moneymaking, Trump wouldn't have sent these two. https://t.co/Noc

After a day sitting opposite Kushner and Witkoff, it’s clear they see Russia’s invasion as a business deal
They keep amplifying what Putin wants, what Russia can gain and what Ukraine must give up.
This is what happens when Trump sends real-estate developers to negotiate a war.

Neither the sombre photos nor the text of this tweet suggest the Ukrainian government expects anything positive from the meeting. That's not surprising, but it's interesting that they're signalling it so clearly.

A meeting with our negotiating team ahead of the meeting with the U.S. President’s envoys. We are ready for the conversation. Ukraine has always been and will remain constructive. We are interested in bringing the end of the war closer. Peace is needed. Security guarantees are ht

Logistically, if Kushner & Witkoff are still in Moscow at the time of writing this, there is next to no chance they can mathematically arrive in Kyiv by tomorrow morning unless they fly directly from Moscow, which would be an extraordinary thing to happen in and of itself.

@ruth_deyermond What about what could be called ‘innocent plagiarism’, where someone paraphrases an existing text without attribution because they didn’t know of it?

@ruth_deyermond Thanks for the well written post. This exactly chimes with my experience and belief. Unfortunately some 'stars' are more protected than others, but even with the protection they still have to correct it.

I've encountered plagiarism twice in PhD work. In one case, it was a minor and obvious transcription error that was corrected and not repeated; in the other, the student didn't complete the PhD (this was one of several reasons why).

All this is to say that I have a very strict view of plagiarism and a lot of exposure to work written by scholars in my field over many years, and plagiarism is very, very rare in my experience and absolutely not tolerated.

In over 20 years of peer reviewing journal articles, I think I've seen 3 cases of plagiarism. I've seen one case in the dozens of articles that have come to me as associate editor. All of these were small instances - a few sentences - and all were treated as plagiarism.

Any amount of plagiarism from two sentences upwards is enough for me to treat something as plagiarised. To be clear on what I mean by plagiarism, this is an explainer I wrote for my students a few years ago: https://t.co/esEhzfoOvt

It's also worth saying, for context, that I'm *very* alert to plagiarism and that I deal with it whenever I see it. I've spotted and dealt with plagiarism at all levels: undergrad and Masters work; PhDs; in work I'm peer reviewing; and as associate journal editor.

It's worth saying that I see a lot of other scholars' work, beyond what I read for research: as a journal's associate editor; as a regular peer reviewer for other journals; having sat on a national PhD prize jury; supervising and examining PhDs; and having run a job competition.

I've just seen yet another claim on here that plagiarism is common in academia (this time from Nathan Cofnas). In my experience, this claim is absolutely untrue, and it's both misleading and damaging to suggest otherwise. Short 🧵

It's New Year, so time to look back and forward. These are 10 things I think we need to recognise in 2026. It’s a response to what I think are profoundly damaging mistaken assumptions I’ve heard and read from practitioners, journalists, and analysts in 2025. Warning: very long🧵
