El nepotismo fue prohibido por la Constitución de Apatzingán (1814). No podían concurrir en el gobierno parientes hasta el cuarto grado. En ningún poder podían estar dos o más parientes en primer grado y, en el legislativo, en segundo grado. Tampoco había sucesión de parientes.
