@UtterlyInterest You’re missing a key point here. He wrote this letter in response to a request to prove his ancestry before The Hobbit could be published in Nazi Germany. This is 1938 - long before the horrors of Nazism had been revealed to the world. He wasn’t perfect but he was a decent man.
