@Samfr @Kathy_Rastle @glukianoff writes about this. He suffered from major depression himself and has warned over and over that we are teaching ways of thinking and framing events that look just like anxious and depressed thoughts. I see it the Gen Z and Alpha kids I know a lot

@Samfr The unhappiness is partly to do with climate, geopolitics, etc. Also seeing snapshots of 'better' lives online breeds discontent.
Living arrangements v interesting, because the same live alone. Suggests people choosing parents over poor relationships? This would be a goo

@Samfr The revealed preference of every UK political party is that if they have to choose between upsetting some NIMBYs or millions of adults in their 20s and 30s living with their parents they will choose the latter every time

One of the charts I discuss in the post. That's a hell of a change in a single generation. https://t.co/oMZzi6L9Fk

New post:
Young people are increasingly unhappy. It's a real phenomenon + nothing to do with "snowflakes".
There are lots of standard culprits - social media, school, economy - but none explain the long-term trend.
So what is going on?

Devolution created a natural experiment here. Wales and Scotland went down a different route focusing on "21st century skills". England is outperforming both. It's also outperforming Northern Ireland with its grammar schools.

One stat from the post: more current Reform voters would consider voting for Restore (43%) than the Tories (40%).

New post out:
The split between the Tories and Reform is disastrous for the right.
I look at the liklihood of possible resolutions: a pact, either party gaining dominance, a leadership change or the right-wing press picking a horse.

New post:
"Madmen and realists"
In which I look at the disaster of Trump's foreign policy. And options for what it could look like under a president who is a bully in obvious cognitive decline.

@Samfr @dwallacewells What are they arguing?
1) our emissions are too small to matter if no one else acts (clue: 196 nations have agreed to act)
Or
2) so long as everyone else acts, they won’t notice if we don’t as our emissions are too small (free rider)
Which? https://t.co/

@Samfr I think the issue is more we have already reduced our emissions more than *any* other developed economy from peak, and *if* continuing to shoulder more than our fair share of the burden impacts cost of living and the economy then it makes sense to look at it

@Samfr "global leadership" in setting targets is not the same as global leadership in cutting emissions without serious harm to growth, employment, standards of living etc.

Bonus content: I didn't include them in the post, but these are some of the ads from the 1990s I mention that were done by a fossil fuel funded front group called "Informed Citizens for the Environment". https://t.co/Uhizs1dCuB

New post:
With climate change now visible all around us opponents of action are changing tack.
Dismantling their new attacks helps identify a hidden structure in political argument that is often used to try and kill popular policies.

My post from this week on the right's latest obsession: "suicidal empathy".
Where it comes from; why it's so dangerous; and what a proper analysis of empathy tells us about policy.
