Last year, I made the questionable decision to spend an entire NFL season gambling on my phone while reporting on the sports-betting industry. The resulting Atlantic cover story generated more conversation than I expected about what the gambling boom is doing to sports, politics, 15.6K views · 220 likes · 16 reposts · 14 replies Open on X →

Spencer Cox tried to heal American politics. It almost broke him. I visited the Utah governor's hometown to interview him about the Charlie Kirk assassination, the backlash to his Trump endorsement, his new book, and his dark night of the soul. https://t.co/pH9n2BH4gF 90.1K views · 275 likes · 46 reposts · 78 replies Open on X →

A truly dystopian story about an improbable influencer and the algorithmic prison he's locked himself in. 55.5K views · 138 likes · 12 reposts · 4 replies Open on X →

@mckaycoppins Mexican here: Dude, no offense, but can't believe he strung you along for so long. Everything sounds so fake. Also, his girlfriend, who you describe as "upper-middle class", has a life story no true upper-middle class Mexican has. 15.3K views · 532 likes · 1 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →

@mckaycoppins @TaylorLorenz You still published it even realizing he was bullshitting and didn’t lead with that so everyone just kinda skims the top? Wow. Terrible decision. Historically relevant fuck up from the Atlantic 10.2K views · 374 likes · 3 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →

@mckaycoppins TLDR: an obvious hoaxer strung me along for many months with a truly ridiculous story that played on the most cartoonish stereotypes of Mexico and was impossible to verify. Then it turned out that he was lying and had made it all up! The End 137.5K views · 3.4K likes · 65 reposts · 24 replies Open on X →

Last year, I met a Mexican athlete who told me an incredible story—that he’d been kidnapped in 2023 and forced to compete for his life in a secret tournament of cartels. Once I started reporting, the story only got more surreal. For the May issue: https://t.co/O7YQwJRpu5 3.8M views · 8K likes · 1.1K reposts · 192 replies Open on X →

I have so many more people to thank—those who helped me write and edit it, those who helped promote it, and of course my very generous subject—but I'll do that later when I have more time. For now, please consider buying the book if you haven't already: https://t.co/3Iy0Bq09Qn 4.7K views · 25 likes · 3 reposts · 2 replies Open on X →

Thrilled to share that my book ROMNEY: A RECKONING will debut at No. 3 on the New York Times Best Sellers list! Can't tell you how grateful I am for everyone who's bought the book, read it, shared it, and engaged with it. This entire experience has been surreal. https://t.co/nAIU 358.9K views · 811 likes · 51 reposts · 98 replies Open on X →
